Abstract
Optical glass fibres (I) coated with a radiation curable liquid polyethylenically unsatd. coating compsn (II) is claimed which comprises an organic polysiloxane (III) with 2-6 reactive sidechains, each carrying a functional gp (IV) with one reactive site which has been reacted to give a single radiation-curable monoethylenically unsatd. side chain (V) There is one side chain per 500-5000 units of mol.wt. Also claimed is a method of making (I) coated with (II) which has a modulus of elasticity at room temp. and at -60 deg.C, below 3000 by applying (II) to the freshly formed filaments and exposing it to ultra violet light to cure. (II) has low temp. flexibility performance with an unlimited pot life upto 80 deg.C and good speed of cure for high prodn. rates. The soft but physically tough top coating protects the light transmitting communication fibres from abrasion and hydrolysis.
