Abstract
Reactor cylinder for a radiant heater is produced by (i) preparing a liq. vehicle including an alumina dispersion, contg. 1-5% dispersible alumina, up to 0.2% acid and 10-30% water: (ii) diluting the dispersion by addn. of water in an amt. of 40-80%; (iii) adding (by wt. w.r.t. total wt. of behicle) up to 4% magnesium sulphate, up to 10% colloidal silica dn 0.0001-0.1% powdered talc; (iv) mixing solid alumina and silica fibres into the liq. vehicle, the ratio of grams of fibres to gals. of liq. vehicle being between 8:1 and 12:1, (v) blending to form a slurry; and (vi) vacuum moulding around a mandrel to form a cylinder. Optional thermo catalytic reactor cylinders having the desired porosity are produced without the need for a binder and the accordingly high kiln heating temps. The cylinders have improved surface to weight ratio.
