Abstract
In a system for converting heat energy into the energy of fluid flow and then converting this into electrical power, use is made of a magnetohydrodynamic generator (MHD) as an energy conversion device where the passage of an electrically conducting fluid through a strong magnetic field will produce an electrical potential between opposite sides of the throat through which the fluid flows. The magnitude of the power generated with a given fluid is proportional to the velocity of the fluid flow through the throat. Externally applied heat induces convective flow of the mercury in the loop (11) and through the MHD generator (101) and the electrical energy generated (43) is used in part to electrolize a second fluid, sulphuric acid solution into hydrogen and oxygen gases which are introduced to the loop (11) through the injector (59) to increase the rate of fluid flow and increase the power output (45). The gases which contain chemical energy as removed at the top of the loop by the gas separator (71).
