Abstract

Rod has a closed hole at one end for the piston pin and a split bearing assembly at the other end (big end). This split bearing comprises two semicylindrical bearing shells, of which the outer one is retained by a bearing cap. The fibre reinforcement is in the form of an endless double loop, i.e. two loops each with two arms, each loop wraps around the small end, and the junctions at the ends of the arms of the two loops pass around a pin passing through and retaining the bearing cap and the end zone of the outer half of the big end bearing. The inner half of the big end bearing rests against the end zone of a thrust bar occupying the entire space between the two bearings. At each end of the transverse pin, there is pref. a filler piece fitting around the end of the pin and inside the fibre strands. In this zone, the strands are pref. joined together by covering layers (8) of crosswise fibre strands. Covering layers of fibre strands of crosswise orientation may also cover both faces of the loop arms. The closed cylinder for the piston pin is pref. formed of crosswise oriented fibre strands esp. at 0/90 deg. orientation. A quiet running connecting rod is formed, largely without the use of metal components.
