Abstract

Film has (a) thickness 5 microns - 1 mm, (b) more than 40% cis-isomer content, (c) elongation at break (1/10) above 4, (d) tensile strength or tearing strength above 100 MPa, and (e) molecular orientation under extension so that scattering angles of X-rays delta-beta not above 35 deg. are reached. Prepn. of the film by polymerisation of acetylene in film form, is also claimed. Electrically conducting films obtd. by treatment with iodine, opt. after stretching and isomerisation are claimed. Uses are in the optical field, and prodn. of electrical units, e.g. electrodes for cathodic redn., electrolyte cells or solid photovoltaic cells, electrodes for dry cells, batteries and accumulators. Tensile behaviour is less sensitive to O2 (i.e. there is no difference between films stretched in N2 or after at least 15 mins. exposure to O2).
