Abstract
Biomass is grown on granules which can move freely in a container holding a nutrient liquid. The granules are of open-cell construction of typical size 12 x 25 x 25mm and with internal spaces in the egion 0.2 to 2.5mm. The biomass grows within the granules but growth on its surface is prevented by the abrasion between granules as they move in the vessel. The granules are periodically withdrawn from the vessel and compressed to expell the biomass before the granules are returned to the vessel. Pref. the nutrient material is sewage and pref. air is bubbled into the base of the container. Pref. 80% of the bulk volume of each granule is void providing space for biomass growth. Process is used for the biological treatment of domestic or industrial wastes. Periodic reoval of a potion of the granules permits the age of the biomass to be controlled.
