Abstract
Glass wool is produced from glass filaments formed by spinning and drawing a glass melt through orifices in a spinning furnace by passing the filaments over a distributor formed of a series of variable gaps to separate the filaments and then feeding the sepd filaments over a support which simultaneously contacts the filaments on three laterial angular edges. The filaments are then attenuated by a hot blast from a burner. The orifice plate may be surrounded by a skirt through which is circulated an air stream and the distributor is preferably made of thin stainless steel or phosphor bronze plates which are clamped together with interposed liners to form variable gaps. Used for thermal insulating building and aircraft. There is improved production rate and fuel efficiency.
