Abstract

4-12 (5-8)C olefins are converted to propylene by contact with a crystalline zeolitic alumino-silicate having SiO2/Al2O3 ratio (Z) not more than 300, e.g. a ZSM 5 or ZSM 11 zeolite, at space velocity higher than 50 (pref. 60-250) kg/hr. olefins per kg. zeolite, at 400-600 deg. C. The zeolite is pref. used in acid form or modified with Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, P, Cr, Cu or Zn has average crystallite size below 0.5 micro m., and Z=25-220; it may be admixed with SiO2 or Al2O3 as binder. Activation with air at 450-750 deg. C, and periodic regeneration with air at 400-600 deg. C is appropriate. A mixt. of 4C olefins and paraffins that is not readily separable may be treated by the following steps; by contact with a zeolitic catalyst at 320-380 deg. C the 4C olefins in the mixt. are oligomerised at 5-8C olefins. These are sepd. by condensn. from the 4C paraffins, and converted by the present process to a mixt. contg. propylene. Hydrocarbons contg. 4 or more C atoms are then sepd. by condensn. from the propylene and other hydrocarbons of less than 4C atoms.
