Abstract

The rack-and-pinion steering device includes a transmission piston (11) for transforming an axial displacement of a rack-engaging helical pinion into a displacement of a vable member (16) of a control valve (15). When the torque applied to the pinion becomes zero, the valve member is returned to a central neutral position against friction. This return is achieved by an auxiliary prestressed spring (21). The piston engages the valve member via a push rod (18) responsive to pressure in a variable vol. chamber (12).
