Abstract

The torque-sensing transducer comprises a sleeve (1) of soft magnetic material, attached concentrically and rigidly to an axle (4), a pair of excitation windings (10,11), a pair of sensing windings (8,9) and a magnetic housing (5) concentrically surrounding the windings and the axle. The sleeve is formed with two parallel, spaced-apart annular zones (2,3) each provided with uniformly spaced-apart slits inclined to a generatrix of the surface of the sleeve. The slits in the two zones are oppositely inclined and lie in the range 30 to 60 degrees to the generatrix. The excitation windings are series-connected and generate a magnetic flux in the sleeve in each respective annular zone. The measuring windings are connected in opposition, whereby the measuring signals from the two zones approximately cancel each other in case of zero axle torque. When the axle is subjected to a torque, the bars between the slits in the zones (2,3) will be subjected to tensile and compressive stress, respectively, in the direction of the flux. This leads to a polarised magnetic unbalance, which results in a difference voltage from the measuring windings. After phase-sensitive detection, this difference voltage indicates the magnitude and sign of the torque.
