Abstract

Atactic polymer coproduced in the suspension polymerisation of propylene in liquified propylene and separated from insoluble isotactic polymer is dissolved form is heated at 45 - 90 degrees C under a pressure of 13 - 40 kg/cm2, while supplying >=1 solvent (hydrocarbons of >=4C, e.g. butane, pentane, hexane, heptane, 1-butene, cyclohexane, naphthene, benzene, toluene, xylene; C1-8 alcohols, e.g. methanol, ethanol, isobutanol, 2-ethyl hexanol; and alkylene oxides, e.g. propylene oxide, ethylene oxide) (1-20 wt.% of the liquefied propylene) upstream of the evaporator to recover a mixt. of polymer and propylene in molten state. The addn. of a solvent in a minor amount to the liquified propylene evaporator effectively prevents fouling on the heat transfer surface of the evaporator which deteriorates the heat transfer coefficient and can block heat transfer pipes of the evaporator.
