Abstract

The chain link is fabricated from material whose cross section (E) is trapezoidal. The included angle of the section is fixed in relation to that of proprietory bolt cutters or sheet metal cutters. When such tools are used to cut a conventional link with circular cross section there is point contact and therefore very high stress ensuring an easy breakdown of the link. With the trapezoidal link the cutting blades make line contact with the tapered sides of the link with a consequently reduced stress intensity.
