Abstract
Bag (1) is placed between clampable heater places and warmed to a preselected temp. whilst being subjected to a pref. elliptical swivelling motion causing convection and improved heat transference. On reaching temp., the plates are moved apart, pref. automatically, enabling the bag to be removed. Pref. the temp. of the heater plates is programmable and measuring instruments monitor the temp. of both plates and the outside of the bag as it is warmed. Pref., the bag surface temp. is sensed by a pair of spring-mounted surface probes which extend through one of the heater plates. They are mechanically actuated and activate a signal as soon as the freezing sample is completely thawed. The plates are pref. supported by a holding device moved over a fixed base by a swivelling device . Each plate pref. comprises an electrically insulating plastic sheet fixed to a heating conductor sheet onto which first a thin electrically insulating sheet and a 2nd Cu sheet are fixed. Process and appts. are used for thawing such substances as frozen human blood samples of mass 50-500 gram in form of thin plates 5-10 mm thick. Prevention in deterioration of quality of sample is achieved because overheating of the freezing sample or incomplete melting is prevented. Also, special sample holders, handling by trained personnel, and drying and sterilisation of wet bags because of water immersion thawing are all eliminated.
