Abstract

Sulphidic ores and/or concentrates are flash smelted, together with recycled dust and a flux having a CaO:SiO2 ratio of 0.65-0.75, in a vertical flame in a technical oxygen atmos. to obtain 85-100% desulphurisation and the resulting dispersed melt is reduced at 1100 deg.C by direct filtration using a bed of carbonaceous material in the path of the flame. The process is esp. useful for lead recovery from sulphidic lead or lead-zinc ores and/or concentrates and gives a 7-9.5 fold increase in productivity, 5-10% increase in lead recovery, and improved quality of the zinc sublimate obtd. on processing the zinc-contg. slag by-prod. due to the redn. in lead oxide content.
