Abstract

Appts. for producing pref. plastic gusseted bag, most pref. of high density or oriented low density polyethylene, includes first and second sets (34,36) of vertically aligned rollers between which is positioned a slotted anvil (38), pref. provided with spacing pads (41), which is located within a supply of gusseted tubing (32) passing between the rollers. Means (44), pref. cam actuated, are provided to hold the tubing and anvil stationary whilst one face of the tube is transversely cut (40) and the other face transversely perforated (42). Tubing is subsequently transversely sealed and cuts made, pref. in the form of elongated cut-out portions extending into the bag from its top end including the internal gusset folds and thus forming handles, to create a tongue portion including the transverse cut and perforation. The tongue has at least one hole, pref. two, and pref. the tongues of different bags are welded together to provide a vertically aligned stack for filling. Bag is intended to be one of a stack of bags arranged with all the cut tongue portions facing outwards held together only by the tops of their welded tongues hanging downwards with their top ends adjacent the rise of a stepped path along which articles at a checkout counter of a retail store are passed. Air blown from adjacent the top of the rise causes the front bag of the stack to open and facilitate filling with articles. Once filled, the bag is easily removed by tearing the tongue retaining perforation. Two sets of bags may be provided at the checkout.
