Abstract
Catalyst precursor consists of porous microspheroidal alumina particles impregnated with cupric chloride (3-7 wt.% as Cu). The particles have water content 0.5-2 wt.% and the Cu is uniformly distributed over the entire surface, with a degree of non-uniformity of not more than +/- 7%. The particles suitably have average dia. 30-50 microns (particles larger than 100-110 microns absent and not more than 5-10 % of particles smaller than 20 microns), wt. less through heating to 900 deg.C greater than 8%, surface area 120-220 m/2/g, pore vol. 0.35-0.50ml/g and average pore radius 30-38 Angstroms. The precursor may be prepd. by heating laumina particles at 250-500 deg.C for 1-5 hrs, forming a fluid bed of the particles with a gas kept at not more than 50 deg.c; impregnating the particles with 0.7-0.9 times the total pore vol. of an aq. cupric chloride soln (16-60g.CuCl2 per 100 ml. soln), heating the gas at 5-30 deg.C/hr. to 140 deg.C, maintaining this temp. for 0.5-15 hrs. and cooling. The precursor is easily activated with oxygen at 150-250 deg.C for 4-24 hrs. to transform it into a catalyst which is highly active and selective in the prepn. of dichloro-ethane by oxychlorination of ethylene.
