Abstract
Thermoplastic, segmented coplyesters are disclosed which form solid cements on a substrate at temps. below their melting temp. They consist of 5-75 wt. % amorphous ester units and of 95-25 wt. % crystallisable ester units, which are bonded over ester bonds. The crystallisable ester units have formula -OCR1COOR2O-. The amorphous ester units have formula -OCR3COOR4O-. (Where R1 is a 2-8C gp. of >=1 satd. aliphatic 4-10C dicarboxylic acids and/or a gp. of >=1 aromatic dicarboxylic acids, e.g. terphthalic, isophthalic or phthalic acid, 4.4'-benzophenone-, 4,4'-diphenylmethane-, 4,4'-diphenylether-, 4,4'-diphenylthioether- or 4,4'-diphenylamino- dicarboxylic acid. R2 is a gp. of >=1 satd. aliphatic 2-12C diol, R3 is R1 or R5. R4 is R2 or R6. R5 is a divalent 22-50C gp. obtd. after removing COOH gps. from satd. aliphatic carboxylic acid dimers. R6 is a divalent gp. obtd. after removing OH gps. from long-chained diols having av. mol. wt. 200-4000). >=1 of R3 and R4 in each amorphous ester unit is R5 or R6, R2 contains 6-12C, and amorphous part makes up 50-75 wt. % when R1 is an aromatic gp. Copolyester has a differential thermal analysis melting temp. 25-150 degrees C, inherent viscosity >0.5dl/g. at 25 degrees C (measured in solns. of 0.3g/dl. polymer in CHCl3 at 25 degrees C) and an open time >=1/4 min. at 20 degrees C. Copolyesters are used as bonding agents or adhesives; for protective coatings; base lacquer coats, e.g. on polyesters; as heat-activated adhesives; permanent binders, e.g. for magnetic tapes. Strong reliable bonds can be obtd. on substrates, without using volatile components and without exposing substrates to high temps. The coplyesters adhere well to porous materials, glass, metals, ceramics and other polymers. Copolyester contg. 52% crystalline blocks and 48% amorphous blocks was prepd. from 30.7 pts. adipic acid, 27.2 pts. 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol and 42.1 pts. poly-(oxytetramethylene)-glycol, mol. wt. 2000. It had open time 4 min., melting temp. 90 degrees C.
