The wheel rim is made to separate into two halves to ease tyre changing. The inside of the wheel rim is fitted with a special band (3) of plastic material which supports the wheel load if the tyre is deflated. This band is made in at least three sections bolted into a ring around the wheel rim. Each side of the ring is spaced from the sides of the wheel rim by inserts (4, 5) of plastic. The inserts are moulded on one side to lie along the profile of the tyre wall, while their inside edges are metal clad for a low friction contact with the ring. When they tyre is deflated and the ring supports the wheel load, some relative movement of the ring and wheel rim is possible.
