Abstract

In order to optimise a safety covering device for air openings in special-purpose vehicles with profiled strips (1) of angularly, T-shaped or S-shaped curved cross-section and arranged parallel to one another in such a way that the protection against the penetration of foreign bodies is increased whilst at the same time improving the air through-flow, the profiled strips (1) are each composed of a composite material which is assembled from individual profiles (2, 3, 4). <IMAGE>

Description

AIR VENT COVERING DEVICE FOR SPECIAL-PURPOSE VEHICLES Device to ensure that air vents in special-purpose vehicles are covered The invention relates to a device to ensure that air vents are covered in special-purpose vehicles using profiled strips arranged parallel to one another and whose cross-sections are curved to form angles, T- or S-shapes.
Special-purpose vehicles, which are used for so-called off-road operation, frequently have the area under the bonnet including the cooling system sealed off in order to prevent breakdown of the vehicle due to damage to these parts of the drive system due to penetration of foreign bodies. To achieve this, the supply to the engine of combustion air and cooling air is normally ensured using protective grating systems. Generally speaking, these areas under the bonnet have two of these so-called gratings for ventilation- purposes with a fan near the air supply (inlet grating) drawing in the required amounts of air and a free outflow of the used air being made possible near the outlet grating.
The requirements, therefore, for suitable protective devices are a sufficiently large opening in the overall system for the required air throughput and the formation of air channels such that penetration by foreign bodies can be prevented.
The use of such grating systems in vehicle construction is known in DE-OS 37 03 716, profiled strips of the type described at the beginning being used, each having at the end facing the inside of the vehicle additional profiles or profiled parts of which parts are essentially arranged PA 98101/2 - 2 - transversely in relation to the end of the profiled strips in order to be able to keep even stray splinters of foregin bodies away from the inside of the vehicle. However, an optimum design of these known devices has not yet been achieved.
The object of the invention is to optimise these known grating systems so that there is increased protection against penetration by foreign bodies together with improved air flow-quantities .
According to the present invention, there is provided a device for protecting an air passage against shot fragmentation and splintering in special-purpose vehicles, comprising: a plurality of parallel profiled strips having a predetermined cross-section; and a composite of individual outer sections in said strips, said composite of individual outer sections being of predetermined material and defining at least one space therebetween; and sandwich components occupying said space at least partly, and being of predetermined material and predetermined shape, whereby passage of foreign matter, including splintering and shot fragmentation, through said device into said air passage is minimized by converting kinetic energy of the shot into deformation energy, and splinters and shot fragments are caught within said space due to the material and shape of said sandwich components. - 2a - The advantages of the device as per invention lie in particular in that due to the combination of materials with varying physical and chemical including thermal and radiological properties for the composite material used as profiled strips protection against penetration by foreign bodies is decidedly increased compared with known gratings, because, for example, by combining extremely hard materials which are not very tough with materials which are not very hard but which are very tough, foreign bodies which appear are intercepted initially by the very tough materials. The distance between the individual profiled strips can also be enlarged here, bearing in mind the shape of the profile, and this leads to a saving in material and weight and to an improvement in air flow quantity.
Example embodiments of the device as per invention are shown schematically in the drawing.
Fig. 1 shows a specific embodiment in section, -3- Fig. second specific embodiment in section, Fig. third specific embodiment in section, Fig. 4 a further specific embodiment in section, Fig. further specific embodiment in section, Fig. 6 another specific embodiment in section, Fig. 7 another specific embodiment in section, Fig. 8 another specific embodiment in section.
As Figs. 1 to 8 show, the profiled strips 1 required for the formation of a complete device as per invention which is not shown consist respectively of a composite material, which has external, corresponding individual profiles 2, 3, 4 of the most varied shape and spaces 5, 6 located in between, which spaces are filled wholly or partially by sandwich elements 7, 8, the individual profiles 2, 3, 4 being connected to one another by being fitted together.
Figs. 1 to 4 show profiled strips 1 each with two external individual profiles 2, 3 and each with a space 5 on one side which is filled respectively with a sandwich element 7, the individual profiles 2, 3 having the most varied shapes.
Fig. 5 shows a profiled strip 1 which consists of three external, individual profiles 2, 3, 4 with a space 5 on one side which is filled with a sandwich element 7.
A profiled strip 1 with two external, individual profiles 2, 3 and spaces 5, 6 on both sides of these filled with sandwich elements 7, 8 is shown in Fig. 6.
Fig. 7 shows a profiled strip 1 with two external, individual -4- profiles 2, 3 with a space 5 located on one side between them which space has in parts step-shaped sandwich elements 9.
Finally, Fig. 8 shows a profiled strip 1 with two external, individual profiles 2, 3 and a space 5 on one side, the space 5 being partially filled with imbricated sandwich elements 10.
Furthermore, this composite material can definitely be used in other ventilation and protective gratings in fluids to improve protection against the effects of penetration and impact. -5- Profiled strips Individual profile Individual profile Individual profile Space Space Sandwich element Sandwich element Sandwich element Sandwich element
