Description
iivfl ηΐ3>\? nib** >» SKIN CARE AFTERSHAVE Containing antiseptic or antibacterial components SKIN CARE AFTERSHAVE 84849/4 This invention relates to aftershave preparations specifically those containing antibacterial antibiotic antiseptic or retinoic acid components.
The need for aftershave preparations containing antibiotic or retinoic acid components rises in particular for treatment of acne (a chronic inflammatory disorder of the pilosebaceous follicles) most commonly occuring to children in the age of 14-19, especially to boys during their first shaving years.
Children (boys in particular) in the age group of 14-19 have shown to resent using the standard treatment given for acne in form of a face lotion containing antibiotics, or such face cream, or such masks.
It is the purpose of this invention to combine the use of an aftershave lotion, cream or emulsion having the standard formulation of an aftershave (alcohol, cooling agent etc), and including in said formulation a required amount of an antibiotic agent which known to have sufficient antibacterial activity, or retinoic acid, which will provide the user (daily) with the needed medication to combat Acne.
Simmilar preparations could also be used for . body or legs lotions or creams to be used after shaving or . depillating of legs or underarm hair by women having any inflammatory wounds, or infiammed skin in the area shaved or depillated. The contents of the aftershave formula will have to be adjusted to this use, by reducing the alcohol contents, but the presence of the antibiotic ingredient or the retinoic acid should be in the same proportions to provide treatment. s Acne is predominantly caused by genetic factors, and is confined to areas where the sebaceous glands are developed. 84849/4 Hormone production (androgen) serves an important role of acne occurence, and androgen induces acne apperance in susceptible regions. Where acne appears one usually finds bacterial infection (corynebacteriam and staphylococcus epidermitis).
Treatment of acne beyond diet instructions and ellimination of contact of the skin with known acneigenic agents such as cheap brilliantine etc. is either by Endocrine preparations containing progesterone or estrogens, which have little scientific logic and little proof of effectiveness; or the more common and recomended treatment using a wide range of antibiotics with broad-spectrum.
The antibiotics known to have good control of the inflammatory changes of acne are: systemically; tetracyclines - (effective in 7-10 days with dossages of 250-1000mg daily), or topically; 1% Erythromycin, or 1% clindamycin (known commercially as DalacineR), 1% of Neomycin (A,B,C), or 1% chloramphenicol (known commercially as synthomycetine). These are usually applied by different topical treatment in form of creams, lotions, masks. They must be applied for weeks or months to be effective and hence cause resistance and resentment by the young patient.
Other non antibiotic bacteriostatic agents - have been known to be used they include such active ingredients as: Sulphonamides (having a risk of side effects,) retinoic acid.
All these are also formulated in creams, lotions or the like and have the same drawback that young patients do not wish to apply them for long periods, either because of lack of time; or unpleasant feeling caused to 1 boys when they need to treat themselves with creams or masks; or odour or other unpleasant side-effects caused by the cream or lotion. 84849/4 The invention herein provides for an after-shave formulation containing of the knwon antibiotic agents or retinoic acid.
The preferred aftershave formulation will contain: a cooling agent such as menthol 0.01-0.3% a glycol or paraffin such as propylene glycol 15-30% a perfume 0-3% an antibiotic agent or retinoic acid 0.01-2% ethanol to make up to 100%.
The antibiotic agent could be one or a mixture of the following: Tetracycline, Erythromycin, Clindamycin, Neomycin, Chloramphenicol (known commercialy as Syntomycetine), certimonium bromide.
The preparation will either be in form of a clear aftershave lotion, or an aftershave cream or an emulsion.
In another prefered embodiment the said glycol could be either glycerine or hexylene glycol or the like.
In a further embodiment the preparation can be made for use by women to treat their legs or underarms after shaving or depillating hair. The preparation would in such a case contain a higer content of the paraffin or glycol (or glycerine) to the extent of 30-50% and the enthanol content will be reduced or replaced partially by purified water.
The invention can be best demonstrated by way of the attached examples: 84849/4 Examples 1 An aftershave preparation was prepared by mixing the following materials: lay. weight Clindamycin 1 % Menthol 0.1% Propyleneglycol 24% Perfume 1% Ethanol 73.9% This aftershave was tested by a panel of 20 boys in the age range of 15-19, all in their first years of shaving, all having some extent facial acne occurance. By daily use of the lotion after shaving great improvement of acne wounds was observed after six weeks.
Example 2 An aftershave lotion preparation was prepared by mixing the following materials: by weight Erythromycin 1 % Menthol 0.1% Propylene glycol 24% Ethanol 73.9% The after shave lotion was tested on a panel of 20 boys in the age range of 15-19, all in their first shaving years, all having to some extent facial acne occurance. After six weeks of daily use of the lotion, it was ab served that most acne wounds dissapeared.
