Description
7 5 4 7 AN ELECTRIC HEATER The invention relates to electric heaters of the kind used for the supply of relatively small quantities of hot vater to kitchen wash basins and the It is the object of the present invention to provide a safe heater of simple design and of Another object is to provide these heaters at low cost by assembling them from extruded A heater according to the invention consists of an electric heating element composed of two parallel and distanced flat electric resistors provided with electric insulation over their entire surfaces and electrically either in series or in and of a flat sheet of a compressible and felted interposed between the two The heating positioned and compressed between the flat surfaces of two solid plates of a material of high thermal each of which contains at least one water conduit extending proximate the flat surface and having two open ends serving as inlet and outlet The two plates are forcefully pressed against the heating element by resilient contracting means adapted to engage the respective adja edges of the The surfaces of the said plates are substantially of the same dimensions as the heating with the dimension in parallel to the water conduit axis being preferably much larger than the dimension The adjoining ppen ends of the water conduits of the opposed plates communicate by means of a and resilient material such as silicone while the remaining conduit ends are adapted to be attached to domestic water supply In the accompanying drawing which by way of two embodiments of the Figure 1 is a side view of a heater with shaped Figure 2 is a section along of Figure Figure 3 is a longitudinal section through a heater rectangular and Figure 4 is a section along of Figure Referring now to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing a heating element comprises two electrically insulated resistors and of rectangular shape which are separated by a rectangular sheet 1 of a fibrous material such as glass The three layers are pressed together by two spring clips 3 with the long edges of two plates 4 and of a such as an extruded aluminum The frontal clip is shown in state in order to expose the edge of the heating element Each plate possesses a flat and smooth inner contact surface of equal or somewhat larger dimensions than the heating while its long edges are slightly raised on its outside to form 5 for holding the flanges of the spring clips in Each plate is provided with a water conduit integral with the plate body which conduits are open at their both the open ends are shown to be connected to pipes of a domestic water while the two lower open ends are hydraulically connected by a bend Vatertightness of these connections is ensured by gaskets or other sealing means which are not shown in Figures 3 and 4 illustrate a s imilar embodiment of a but having two water conduits 61 and 61 of rectangular cross The heating element is similar to that illustrated in Figures 1 and and so are the spring clips 3 and the raised ledges The water on the other hand extend substantially across the entire width of the plates thereby enhancing the heat transfer from the resistors to the water flowing in the Hydraulic connection between the two lower open ends of the conduits is made by means of a hollow connector 81 of a resilient material such as a silicone which is provided in its top portion with two rectangular openings adapted to fit tightly over the conduit A similar connector 82 is fastened to tthe upper ends of the conduits which serves to connect the heater to a pipe of a water This connector is by a vertical partition into two compartments which direct the water from the pipe 7 to the conduit 61 and from the conduit 61 to the pipe For this purpose the connector 82 is provided with two rectangular openings in its bottom and with two round holes on its opposed vertical The pipes as well as the water conduits 61 are secured in the respective openings of the connector by or other known sealing A temperature controlling device of known design such as a thermostat is connected to one of the plates or conduits adapted to electrically energise or the heating element at predetermined The heater may be enclosed in a insulating but owing to the short periods during which this type of heater is ordinarily heat losses are relatively small and lagging in unnecessary in most Only two embodiments of the heater have been illustrated and described in the however alterations and modifications may be carried out to it by a person skilled in the art vithin the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended It for proposed to provide each plate vith two parallel conduits of smaller diameter so as to improve the heat transfer by greater velocity in the It is also proposed to provide only of the plates vith a water and to the second having no by a thick sheet of omittin the interposed sheet Instead of the electrically connected resistors only one resistor of double length but of the same vidth may be used by bending it double in its middle about a and clamping a felted sheet between its two insufficientOCRQuality
Claims (9)
1. A through-flow heater comprising:- an electric heating element composed of two parallel and distanced flat electric resistors provided with electric insulation over their entire surfaces and electrically interconnected, either in series or in parallel, and of a flat sheet of a heat-resistant, compressible and felted material interposed between the two resistors, two solid plates of high thermal conductivity opposedly positioned on either side of the heating element, each having a flat surface adjoining one side of the said heating element, and at least one water conduit extending proximate the flat surface, each water conduit having two open ends for hydraulic connection, resilient contracting means adapted to engage with adjacent edges of the solid plates and to press the plate surfaces against the heating element surfaces, connectors attached to the water conduit ends of the opposed plates and adapted to make hydraulic connection between the respective conduits and between conduits and domestic water supply piping.
2. A through-flow heater as defined in Claim 1 wherein the water conduits extend in vertical direction, and wherein the vertical dimension of the heating element and of the solid plates is considerably larger than their horizontal dimension.
