Abstract

1478589 Structural elements H STAEGER 20 June 1975 [27 June 1974] 26335/75 Heading E1K [Also in Division F2] In portable building structures or internal structures for buildings &c of the kind wherein a structural element of elongate, preferably extruded, form, e.g. a column 1, has one or more longitudinal grooves 2 each undercut to form walls 4 on either side of an opening 3 through which a hook formation 15 on the end of a pivoted lever 12 may extend, the lever is mounted in a U shaped insert 11 fitted in a hollow end portion of another structural member 7, and is located by a pin 13 and pivoted, against the bias of a spring 14, by a screw 8 to swing the hook formation 15 so that it engages behind one of the walls 4 and clamps the member 7 in abutment with the outer surface of the member 1, the walls 4 having deformable, e.g. resilient, projections 5 which are engaged by the formation 15 to ensure tightness of the joint between member 7 and member 1. The insert 11 has projections 16 which engage a channel 17 in the bottom of the groove 2 to locate the member 7 relative to the member 1. The deformable projections 5 may be either as shown in Fig. 6 or may be shaped as saw teeth (5a, Fig. 5, not shown) so that they offer greater resistance to release movement of the lever 12 than to its tightening movement. Instead of a single lever 12, a pair of levers may be used so that their projections 15 move in opposite directions to simultaneously grip both walls 4 of a groove 2. Either pairs of projections 5 or single projections may be provided on each wall 4. Various alternatives to the octagonal column 1 of Fig. 2 are disclosed, e.g. a hexagonal or part-hexagonal column (Figs. 7-9, not shown), various panels, panel connectors (Figs. 10-16) and a complex column, Fig. 17, having three centre cores 24. In the panel shown in Fig. 11, only one end has a groove 2, the other end having a slot 22. Various hollow passageways 19 (20) 23 may be provided in the various panels or panel connectors to form double-walled panels or a part double-walled panel including a single-wall section 21. In the corner panel connector of Fig. 15, additional grooves 2a face laterally inwardly. [GB1478589A]

Description

Profile element for the assembly of mobile structures and fittings thereof miay im?a.:i U¾T"» 3 D'aaa naain ^sna :in ti' The Invention relates to a profile element for the assembly of mobile structures and fittings provided with at least ^ one groove extending parallel to Its longitudinal axis and serving t to accommodate a lock1ng-dev1 ce lever or the like, which lever can be forced against at least one wall of the groove, thereby producing a damping effect.
Profile elements of this type are known. They have the advantage of facilitating the simple and rapid assembly and subsequent disassembly of fair and exhibition structures. As with the known profile elements the connection between two such elements 1s ensured by the action of a locking device held 1n the grooves solely by effect of force-generated friction, these known profile elements have the disadvantage, particularly felt with heavy loading, that the clamping effect 1s liable to be Insufficient to reliably ensure the position of the locking device.
It 1s the object of the present Invention to avoid these drawbacks and to provide a profile element designed to permit, at least 1n part, to Immobilize the position of the locking device by virtue of shape-generated effect, without Increasing production costs to any appreciable degree or impairing proper functioning of the element.
The Invention consists 1n that the wall of the groove Is provided with projections which, under the clamping effect, are permanently deformable. Due to this design, the formation 1s made possible of an. abutment effective by virtue of shape, after Insertion and actuation of the locking device lever. As the profile elements according to the Invention are preferably designed as drawn profiles, 1t 1s of advantage 1f the projections are given the shape of ribs extending parallel to the longitudinal axis of the profile element. The novel profiles may then be produced 1n a very simple manner by the extrusion process, so that production costs will be very low. Yet the use of continuous ribs permits the provision^ by deformation, of an axial abutment at any point along the profile element. Even with the use of slight clamping forces, this abutment ensures reliable positioning.
With locking devices the clamping-lever noses of which are designed to make lateral contact with the inner side of an outer profile wall , it is of advantage if at least one rib is provided 1n the edge zone of the groove slot required for the Introduction of the clamping leverv, because at this point the forces generated by the clamping lever are largest, and because this zone can always be reached by the nose making lateral contact. It 1s of advantage if the rib arranged at this point or even further ribs within reach of the nose making lateral contactjare given a cross-sectional profile inclined in a direction pointing away from the groove slot, so that 1n the direction in which they are subsequently pressed by the clamping-lever nose, they will offer less resistance to deformation.
The novel profile elements may be given different shapes, the characteristic features of which are defined 1n the subclaims and 1n the following description, 1n which preferred embodiments of the invention are described and explained with the aid of drawings, by way of examples only.
In the drawings: Fig. 1 1s a perspective view of a novel profile element designed as an upright column which can be connected via a locking device with another profile element designed as a strut-like member; Fig. 2 1s a cross-sectional view of the profile element shown 1n Fig. 1, 1n the position 1n which It fe assembled with a further profile element and with the locking device; Figs. 3 to 5 .show enlarged views of the outer walls of the clamping grooves of the profile elements shown 1n Figures 1 and 2; Fig. 6 1s an enlarged view of a groove wall similar to Figures 3 to 5, but Including the mounted clamping nose of the locking device; Figs. 7 iOt-9 show profile elements consisting of a whole, hexagonal prism and a longitudinally divided, octagonal pr1 sm; F1gs. 10 to 14 show profile elements which are wholly or partly designed as hollow-wall elements and are provided with clamping grooves on their narrow faces; Figs. 15 and 16 show hollow-wall profiles which are of a bent shape; and F1g. 17 1s a cross-sectional view of a column element which, essentially 1s compounded of two octagonal prisms and an Intermediate piece.
F1g. 1 shows a profile element 1 1n the shape of an octagonal) prism provided with eight clamping grooves 2 1n the form of hollow spaces extending symmetrically with and parallel to, Its longitudinal axis, each of which spaces opens toward the outside via a slot 3. As 1s clear from Fig. 2, the outer walls 4 of groove 2, which are adjacent to entrance slot 3, are provided on their Inner side with ribs.5 extending parallel to the longitudinal axis. Figures 1 and 2 further show that profile element 1 may be connected via a locking device 6 w¾th, for example, a strut-Uke profile element 7. This 1s done by tightening a screw 8 through an opening 9 of profile element 7. This screw engages 1n a thread 10 of a clamping lever 12 tlltably resting against the Inside of the U-shaped profile element 11 of locking device 6.
Clamping lever 12 1s retained Inside element 11 by a pin 13 and ,ίΐ Is restored to Its original position by action of a spring 14„ when screw 8 1s loosened. At ts front end, clamping lever 12 presents a nose 15 which, upon tlghtenl ngoof screw 8, 1s forced sideways against wall 4 and ribs 5, as 1s shown 1n detail also 1n Fig. 6. As element 11 1s also provided with two projections 16 which engage in a further groove 17 within groove 2, locking device 6 1s reliably and tightly seated In groove 2 after actuation of clamping lever- 12. The axial position of the locking device is ensured by the plastic deformation of the frontal rib 5 caused by the tightening of screw 8» since due to the deformation of rib 5 over the width of nose 15, a recess 1s formed In rib 5, 1n which nose 15 is securely seated.
Figures 3 to 5 show that walls 4 of grooves 2 can be provided with two ribs 5„ or with one rib only, which in the latter case must be arranged in the edge zone of entrance slot 3, so that Its contact with nose 15 of clamping lever' 12 1s ensured. F1g. 5 shows the arrangement of ribs 5a, the profile of which 1s Inclined 1n a direction pointing away from the entrance slot, so that nose 15 of clamping lever 12, moving sideways in direction of arrow 18, has to overcome only a slight resistance to deformation.
Other profile elements, with which the clamping effect 1s not attained by noses 15 of a clamping lever 12 acting laterally but, for example by parts pressing symmetrically against the Inner walls of groove 2, can obviously be provided with ribs 5 not on outer walls 4, but on the lateral walls or indeed on those walls of groove 2 against whichthe clamping members of the locking device are pressed.
Figures 7 to 9 show cross sections of profile elements which 1h contrast to those of Figures 1 and 2, are not derived from an or as shown In Figures 8 and 9, as half and quarter profiles respectively, derived from an octagonal prism. m For the sake of simplicity, each groove 2 of these profiles 1s provided with one rib, arranged on outer wall 4. Figures 10 to 14 show profile elements at least partly designed as hollow-wall profiles comprising several chambers 19 and 20. Adjacent to chambers 19 there are arranged grooves 2 1n the form of hollow spaces opening toward the outside via a slot 3. With the profile element shown 1n F1g. 11 , chambers 20 are replaced by a plain wall 21, and one of the outer chambers 19 s not followed by a groove 2, but by a recess 22 completely open toward the outside. The profile elements of Figures 15 and 16 are also provided with chambers 19 with adjacent grooves 2 and slots 3, and are of a bent shape, constituting a quarter circle. The profile element of F1g. 15 has no [closed] chambers 19, the latter being replaced by grooves 2a which are provided with slots 3, enabling locking devices to be attached also at these points. The corresponding walls are again provided with ribs 5. To facilitate production by the extrusion process, openings 23 are provided, extending 1n the axial direction.
F1g. 17 represents the cross-section of a special profile element which, essentially, consists of the profiles shown 1n F1g. 1, two of these profiles being combined together with an ntermediate piece 24, to form a profile element having twelf grooves 2.
