Claims (4)
1. WHAT WE CLAIM IS : - 1. A method of inserting vertical sheet members prior to the formation of a trench in. which a pipeline is to be laid comprising the steps of excavating spaced-apart pilot trenches, inserting in said pilot trenches trench wall support means, excavating further sections of said pilot trenches in advance of the trench wall support means, locating vertical elongate members between cantilevered side wall structures of the trench vertical e1em$ak wall suppprt means and allowing the skeet members to move downwardly into contact with the bottom of the trench and advancing the trench wall support means into said further sections of the trenches leaving the sheet members in situ.
2. Method for supporting the walls of a ground trench comprising the steps of excavating a pilot trench, inserting in said pilot trench a trench shoring apparatus so as to support the side walls of said trench, excavating a further section of the pilot trench in advance of the trench shoring apparatus, locating vertical elongate sheet members in longitudinal vertical slots in each side of the trench shoring apparatus and allowing the sheet members to move downwardly into contact with the bottom of the trench, placing means in the bottom of the trench to hold said sheet members in position and advancing the trench shoring frame into said further section of the trench leaving the sheet members in situ.
3. A method as claimed in Claim 2, including the additional . step of returning fill to the trench between the sheet members so as to provide resistance to cause advancement of the trench shoring apparatus into said further section of the trench.
4. A method for supporting the walls of a ground trench substantially as herein described with reference to and as illustrated in Figures 1 to 3 of the accompanying drawings. 44359/2 the said walls of said trench, excavating a further section β of the trench in advance of the trench shoring apparatus, locating vertical elongate sheet members in longitudinal vertical slots in each side of the trench shoring apparatus and allowing the sheet members to move downwardly into contact with the bottom of the trench, placing means in the bottom of the trench to huld said sheet members in position, refilling the trench between the sheet ( oabers and utilising the refilled spoil to cause advancement of the trench shoring apparatus in the direction of the trench leaving the sheet members in situ, removing the refilled spoil from between the sheet members, locating means between the sheet members so as to maintain the sheet members in spaced apart relationship and placing pipe sections between said sheet members. 6· A method as claimed in Claim 5, including the additional step of covering said pipe sections and withdrawing said sheet members · 7. A method for use in the laying of a pipeline in a ground trench substantially as herein described with reference to and as illustrated in Figure 6 of the accompanying drawings. 44359/2 8. A trench shoring apparatus comprising opposed side-wall members adapted to be positioned adjacent the side walls of a ground trench when said trench shoring apparatus is placed in a trench, means for supporting said side wall members in spaced apart relationship so that they will be capable of providing lateral barriers against the inward movement of the side walls of the trench, each side wall member having a front end and a rear end, the rear end of each side wall member having an elongated vertical slot that has a U-shaped configuration when viewed from above, the open end of the U facing rearwardly, each of said vertical slots being sufficiently large so that at least one elongated shoring member may pass downwardly therethrough and rest on the bottom of the trench, and means to advance said side wall members along said ground trench. 9. A trench shoring apparatus according to claim 8 wherein the means to advance said side wall members along said ground trench comprise a thirust plate structure located between the opposed side wall members and rearwardly offset front end and jack means operatively connecting each side wall member with said thrust plate, whereby said side wall members can be 44359/2 contracting said jack means j 10, A trench shoring apparatus according to Claim 9 wherein said side wall members each include a downwardly extending section extending below the lower level of said thrust plate structure. 11. A trench shoring apparatus according to Claim 9 or Claim 10 wherein said apparatus includes a hopper which straddles the side wall members and which is pivotable by means of hydraulically operated hopper jacks to place soil behind the thrust plate structure. .
