Claims (17)
1. What we claim is:- 1. A tobacco smoke filter comprising a rod-like or tubular element of bonded filaments or fibres and a substantially air-impermeable tubular member enclosing the element, the element having at its circumferential surface grooves which extend from one end of the element only partially along its length to provide channels between the element and the tubular member, and being engaged with the tubular member around the whole of its periphery over at least one portion of its length.
2. A filter according to claim 1 wherein the said grooves extend from the said one end parallel to the longitudinal axis of the element.
3. A filter according to claim 1 or 2 wherein one end of the element is engaged around the whole of its periphery with the tubular member. z+.
4. A filter according, to any of claims 1 to 3 wherein the element is adhered to the tubular member over the or each said region of engagement.
5. A filter according to any of claims 1 to wherein one or more grooves in the element surface terminate short of each end of the element and/or extend from the other end of the element partially along its length.
6. A cigarette provided with a filter according to any of claims 1 to 5.
7. A cigarette according to claim 6 wherein an end of the element from which grooves extend is disposed towards the tobacco of the cigarette.
8. A cigarette according to claim 6 or 7 v/herein the air-impermeable tubular member is a tipping overwrap connecting the filter to the cigarette.

Λ method of making a tobacco smoke filter which comprises providing a filamentary or fibrous material, applying a bonding constituent to it, forming the material and the bonding constituent into a rod-like or tubular element, activating the bonding constituent to adhere the fibres or filaments to each other at thei points of contact , and forming in the peripheral surface of the element grooves which .extend from one end of the element only partially along its length, enwrapping the element in an air-impermeable tubular member and engaging the element to the tubular member around the whole of its periphery over at least one portion of its length.
10. A method according to claim v/herein the grooves are formed before the activation of the bonding constituent.
11. A method according to claim 9 or 10 wherein the element is produced continuously in elongate form with discontinuous longitudinal grooves spaced along its length, the elongate element being cut into individual lengths before or after entrapment or engagement with the air-impermeable tubular member.
12. A tobacco smoke filter substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings. 15.

14. A tipped cigarette substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
15. A cigarette provided with a filter according to claim lu.
16. A method of making a tobacco smoke filter substantially as hereinbefore described.
17. A method of making a tipped cigarette substantially as hereinbefore described.
