Abstract
The parent patent refers to a compact gravity settlement appts used for the sepn into two phases of dispersions of non-miscible liqs. having different densities. The settlement rate is considerably increased by the presence of stacks of inclined plates; even so greater efficiency is required in large vol. appln. such as the concn. of brine during desalination in order to recover interesting dissolved substances. In the patent of addn. the capacity of the appts is increased by the incorporation of a precoalescence chamber in the distributor. This contains a cage with a lining of highly porous particles, such as Raschig rings; the walls of the cage are provided with slits to render them permeable to liqs. During operation, the liq-liq dispersion from a mixing gp. is introduced into the distributor and passed through the cage, into the deposn. chamber. An appreciable degree of coalescence takes place among the droplets so that the capacity of the appts. is increased. The pre-coalescence effect increases the degree of sepn. of the phases by at least 20% and in certain cases up to 100%.
