Abstract

1456229 Supply systems for portable calculators TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Inc 14 Dec 1973 [30 March 1973] 58039/73 Heading H2H A portable calculator 1 comprises battery receiving members 20-23 capable of receiving a first set or a second set of batteries for supplying a voltage to the calculator, and a switch SW3 which is opened when the receiving member 20 is occupied by a battery of the second set. The first set of batteries consists of three Ni-Cd rechargeable batteries B1-B3 which supply a voltage to the calculator via output terminals OUT when a manual switch SW1 is closed. Alternatively a battery charger may be connected to input terminals EXT IN to supply the calculator and charge the batteries via a resistor R. The connecting of the charger automatically opens a switch SW2. If the Ni-Cd batteries are replaced by the second set of four non-rechargeable alkaline batteries, the microswitch SW3 is automatically opened and the battery voltage is supplied to the calculator via the closed switches SW2, SW1. In the event of the battery charger being connected to the input terminals EXT IN, the opening of the switch SW2 and the already opened switch SW3 prevent recharging of alkaline batteries. Claims (9)

WHAT IS CLAIMED IS:
1. A voltage adapter comprising: (a) first battery receiving means coupled in a first output terminal for supplying a first direct current voltage in response to a first set of batteries; (b) second battery receiving means in combination with said first battery receiving means for supplying a second direct current voltage in response to a second set of batteries; and (c) switching means responsive to either the presence or absence of said second set of batteries for selectively coupling one of said first or second receiving means to a second output terminal.
2. The voltage adapter of Claim 1 wherein said switching means includes : (a) a first switch connected to said first receiving means and to second receiving means; and (b) a second switch coupling said first switch and said second receiving means to said second output terminal, said first switch selectively coupling said first receiving means to said second switch in the absence of actuation of said second battery receiving means and decoupling said first battery receiving means in the presence of actuation of said second battery receiving means.
3. The voltage adapter of Claim 2 wherein said second receiving
4. The voltage adapter of Claim 3 wherein said first receiving means is adapted to receive either said first set or said second set of batter es.
5. The voltage adapter of Claim 4 and further including rectified voltage receiving means coupled to said first battery receiving means, to said first output terminal, and to said second switch, and said second switch further selectively couples said rectified voltage receiving means to said first battery receiving means through said first switch.
6. The voltage adapter of Claim 5 and further including a third switch selectively coupling said second battery receiving means to said rectified voltage receiving means and to said second switch in the absence of actuation of said rectified voltage receiving means.
7. The voltage adapter of Claim 6 and further including current limiting means coupling said rectified voltage receiving means to said first battery receiving means through said first switch for limiting the current therethrough as supplied by actuation of said rectified voltage receiving means.
8. The voltage adapter of Claim 7 wherein said first set of batteries are rechargable batteries and said second set of batteries are non- rechargable batteries.
9. The voltage adapter of Claim 8 wherein said first set of batteries are nickel cadmium batteries and said second set are alkaline batteries. 43583/2 10· The voltage adapter of claim 9 wherein said first battery receiving means is adaptive to receive three nickel cadmium batteries. 11, The voltage adapter of claim 10 wherein the combination of said first and second battery receiving means is adaptive to receive four alkaline batteries, said first receiving means receiving three batteries and said second receiving means receiving one battery.
