43475/2 WHAT IS CLAIMED IS: water-soluble^
1. A nonabsorbable, nonnutritive,(flavoring composition comprised of an active flavoring agent covalently , bonded through a position on the active flavoring agent that is nonessential for its flavoring activity, with a covalent bond that maintains its physical and chemical integrity in the gastrointestinal tract to a controlling means that is essentially nonmetabolizable and nonabsorbable, and which controlling means maintains the active flavoring agent within the gastrointestinal tract by substantially restricting passage of the composition through the mucosa of the gastrointestinal tract.
2. The flavoring composition of Claim 1 wherein the controlling means is a hydrophilic water soluble organic polymer having an average molecular weight of from 2,500 to 250,000.
3. The flavoring composition of Claim 2 wherein the organic polymer contains not less than one polar functional group selected from the group consisting of amide, amino, carboxyl, ether and hydroxy1 functional groups the ' \ ;■■ ·■ for each three carbon atoms; resent on/average in the organic polymer. ·" ·'>·· ■■■> ;
4. The flavoring composition of Claim 3 wherein the flavoring agent is. bonded to the controlling means through a nonrupturable nondegradable organic bridge which permits 1 the agent to be at least 5 atoms from the controlling means.
5. The flavoring composition of Claim 3 wherein the active flavoring agent is a sweetening agent and the composition is soluble in water to an amount of not less than 100 ppm. 5
6. The flavoring composition of Claim (£ wherein the sweetening agent comprises an aromatic phenol or an aromatic amine .
7. The process for preparing a nonabsorbable ,Γηοη- nutritive form of a flavoring agent which comprises bonding . said agent through a nonrupturable, nondigestable covalent linkage to a controlling molecule, said controlling molecule being nonmetabolizable and of molecular dimensions which ; control and restrict its movement across the walls of the digestive tract, and thereafter recovering the controlling molecule having agent bonded thereto .
8. The process of Claim 7 wherein the controlling molecule is hydrophilic and has a molecular weight of from 2,500 to 250,000.
9. The process of Claim 8 wherein the flavoring agent is a sweetening agent.
10. The flavoring composition of Claim 1 wherein controlling means is a polymer of molecular weight 2,500 to 250,000, which comprises the active flamonomeric voring agent unit. il. The process of rendering nonnutritive a flavoring agent which comprises joining said flavoring agent by a nonrupturable , nondigestable covalent linkage to a polymeric molecule of molecular weight 2,500 to 250,000, and of molecular dimensions which control and prevent its movement across the walls of the digestive tract. .ttori ey for pp icants
