Claims (9)

43448/2 WHAT IS CLAIMED IS:
1. A center-pivot irrigation apparatus which includes a main arm assembly mounted at a first end to a fixed base pivot and rotat-able therearound, the main arm assembly including a fluid carrying conduit having luid discharge means spaced at intervals therealong, characterized by an extension arm assembly pivotally mounted to the other end of the main arm assembly for supporting a fluid carrying conduit said, extension arm assembly and main arm assembly each being supported on at least one support tower, with each assembly supporting' a plurality of spaced irrigating sprinklers; ; means for moving the extension arm assembly with respect to the main arm assembly; and control means for operating said moving means to vary, the angular position of the extension arm assembly relative to the main arm assembly as the, main arm assembly rotates. ,
2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the extension arm assembly is mounted on wheels and further, including means for steering and driving said wheels responsive to the angular position of the main arm assembly relative to the area being irrigated.
3. Apparatus according to< claim 2, wherein said steering means includes means for comparing the' angular position of the main arm assembly to the position .of said steerable wheels.
4. Apparatus according to claims l or 2, further including . stress switch means located on said main arm assembly for initiating movement of said main arm assembly said stress switch being actuated by stresses applied to said main arm assembly by movement of said extension arm assembly.
5. ' Apparatus according to any of the preceding claims, wherein said main arm assembly includes a plurality of colinear sections, each of said sections including independent driving means, the driving means of the outermost section being responsive to the forces applied to the main arm assembly by movement of said extension arm assembly.
6. Irrigating apparatus for supplying water to a non-ciircular area, comprising a rotatable main arm, assembly for supplying water to a circular portion of said area, an extension arm assembly rotatably mounted at the free end of said main arm assembly for supplying water to portions of said area outside of said circular portion, said main arm assembly and said extension arm assembly each of said main a ten r s ei u r on 43448/2 spaced irrigating sprinklers,, at least one of the support towers forsaid extension arm assembly haying steerable wheels, steering means responsive to the angular position.' of' the' main arm assembly relative to said area1 for changing the direction o£; said steerable wheels to thereby rotate said extension arm assembly relative to · said main arm assembly, said steering means comprising a first multi-position switch means responsive to said angular position of; said main arm assembly, a second multi-position, switch means responsive to the position of the steering wheels, and a motor · for driving said steerable wheels connected in an energizing circuit including said first and second multi-position switch means.
7. Irrigating apparatus according' to claim 6 wherein said motor is a reversible motor' and wherein each of said multi-;position switch means comprises at, least two rotary, switches for respectively driving the motor in clockwise and counter-clockwise direction. '
8. Irrigating apparatus according' to claim 7 including two further multi-position rotary switches responsive to the position of,the steerable wheels for determining the direction of rotation of said steering motor' depending upon the position of the steerable wheels. ' ,
9. Irrigating apparatus according to any of claims 6-9, wherein said first multi position switch means is actuated by rotation of at least one of the main arm assembly.
