Abstract
1420686 Settling tanks in series GYPSUM INDUSTRIES Ltd 13 Aug 1973 [14 Aug 1972] 38330/73 Heading B1D Sewage is aerated and delivered to a distribution chamber 5, then overflows into a first settlement tank 1, then underflows into a second tank 2 and then overflows into and out of a third tank 3 and any subsequent tanks. Settled sludge is withdrawn through bottom outlets 20 which are extended by swivellable variable level outlets (Fig. 3 not shown). The distribution chamber has a flow regulator 7, the tanks are rectangular in plan with part-cylindrical bottoms, and the bottoms may have pivoted manual or powered scrapers 23. A surface skimmer 11 with air lift pump 12 may be present in the first tank. The third tank may have a baffle 15 and overflow launders 17 which lead to discharge channels (18) (Fig. 2 not shown). Sets of settlement tanks may operate in parallel. Chlorine may be added through pipe 16.

Claims (13)
1. A method of settling sludge in an activated sludge sewage purification installation comprising passing the sewage water from an aeration unit into a distributing chamber, overflowing the water into a first rectangular settlement canal, underflowing it into a second settling canal across the width of the canal, overflowing it into a third canal and removing it from this canal by overflowing at low velocity and removing the settled sludge from the bottom of each canal which is made concave in longitudinal section.
2. A method as claimed in claim 1 in which floating material is removed fr om the surface of the water in the first canal through a surface skimmer.
3. A method as claimed in claim 1 or 2 in which chlorination of the water entering the third canal is effected.
4. A method as claimed in any of the preceding claims in which the canal bottoms are scraped slowly along the direction of their curvature.
5. Apparatus for sludge settlement in activated sludge sewage purification installations comprising a series of rectangular canals , bottoms of concave longitudinal cross- section with sludge outlets at the lowest point in each canal, a distributing chamber with an overflow discharge to the first canal, an underflow discharge between the first and second canals and an overflow discharge to and from the remaining canals .
6. Apparatus as claimed in claim 5 in which the outlet from the final canal is effected through launders.
7. Apparatus as claimed in claims 5 or 6 in which scrapers are provided to traverse the concave bottoms of the canals along the direction of the curvature.
8. Apparatus as claimed in any one of claims 5 to 7 in which the distribution chamber widens towards the outlet therefrom.
9. Apparatus as claimed in any one of claims 5 to 8 in which a surface skimmer is provided across the width of the first canal.
10. Apparatus as claimed in any one of claims 5 to 9 in which the bottom outlets from the canals are adjustable in height and discharge into a common outlet trough.
11. Apparatus as claimed in any one of claims 5 to 10 in which a flow regulator is included in the distribution chamber.
12. Apparatus for sludge settlement in activated sludge sewage purification installations substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawings .
13. A method of settling sludge in an activated sludge sewage purification installation substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawings .
