Claims (14)

WHAT IS CLAIMED IS I
1. A fluid-driven reciprocating pump, comprising* a housing defining a pair of expansible chambers" each containing a dieplaoeable member movable to expand and contra ct the respective chamber, the moveable member in a least one of the expansible chambers being a flexible diaphragm; means oonduoting the ma terial to be pumped to the flexible diaphragm, j chamber so as to be pumped upon the expansion and contraction o f the chamber; a reeipro^ting rod connecting the flexible diaphragm of the one chamber with the displa ceable member of the other chamber so tha t they move in unison; a main having a driving fluid inlet, a driving fluid outlet, a connection to said pair of expansible chambers, and a piston moveable from a first position effeoting communica tion between the fluid inlet and the pair of chambers to introduce the driving fluid into the chambers, to a second position effecting communica tion between the chambers and the fluid tfu iei'ie *o -- discharge the fluid from the ohambers; a pilot main valve having a moveable piston and fluid connections to the y" ma in valve^ and *k-e* opera ting means carried by the recipro-( ea tin rod engageable wi th the piston of the pilot valve for reciproca tion of the reciprocating rod and thereby an expansion a nd contraction of the diaphragm chamber*
2. * A pump a ccording to Claim 1, wherein the dieplaoeable member of the other expansible chamber is also a flexible diaphragm*
3. * A pump a ccording to Claim 2, wherein the housing includes a plurality of tie rods rigidly coupling the two expansible chambers together* P.A. 42870/2 \ '
4. A pump according to either of Claims 2 or 3, further including a return spring siding the elasticity of the flexible diaphragms in returning the reciprocating rod after being driven in one direction by the driving fluid.
5. A pump according to any one of Claims 1-4, wherein said main valve includes a body formed with an axial bore, an inlet opening communicating with one end of the bore, an outlet opening communicating with the other end of the bore, an annular channel formed exteririly of the valve body at an intermediate location between the inlet and outlet openings, at least one intermediate opening formed at said intermediate location of the bore and leading therefrom into said annular channel, the main valve further including a piston axially movable within the bore, the piston including a plurality of piston heads which in one position of the piston establish communication between the intermediate opening and lie inlet opening, and in another position establish communication between the intermediate opening and the outlet opening.
6. The device according to Claim 5, wherein said piston heads comprise resilient conical cups at opposite ends of the piston, and an intermediate resilient conical cup at an intermediate location in the piston.
7. The device according to Claim 6, wherein the inlet opening end of the piston comprises two conical cups in side-by-side relation with the smaller diameter end of one facing t¾¾t of the other.
8. The device according to any one of Claims 5-7, wherein there are a plurality of intermediate openings arranged in an annular array around and through the valve body wall from the
9. A pump according to any one of Claims 1-8, wherein said conducting means comprises an inlet one-way valve and an outlet one-way valve leading to and from the flexible diaphragm chamber.
10. A pump according to Claim 11, wherein each of said one-way valves comprises a housing formed with a fluid chamber therein, the chamber having an inlet and an outlet; a flexible diaphragm disposed within said chamber and dividing same into a fluid inlet compartment containing the inlet and a fluid outlet compartment containing the outlet; said inlet including a tube having an end engagable with the center of one face of the diaphragm, the periphery of the diaphragm including one or more openings establishing communication between the two compartments, whereby fluid flow in one direction, from theiinlet tube, causes the diaphragm to flex out of engagement with the inlet tube permitting the flow of fluid into the inlet compartment and through HE one or more openings into the outlet compartment and then through the outlet therefrom, whereas fluid flow in the reverse direction, from the outlet, causes the diaphragm to flex into engagement with the inlet tube, thereby interrupting the fluid flow thereto.
11. A device according to Claim 10, wherein the diaphragm in the one-way valve includes a central reinforooient overlying the end of the inlet tube.
12. A device according to Claim 11, wherein said communication between the two compartments is established by a circular array of openings formed around the periphery of the one-way valve diaphragm coaxial to said central reinforcement thereof.
13. A device according to any one of Claims 10-12 wherein the one-way valve housing is formed of two sections , one section including an annular rib, and the other section including a circular recess receiving the rib of the one section with the diaphragm therebetween, for securing the diaphragm in the chamber formed by the two sections.
14. A liquid-driven reciprocating pump substantially as described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
