Claims (15)
1. » A drying apparatus comprising a housing, roller means presenting a continuous cylindrical surface and located within the housing for supporting a length of material transported through the housing, means to introduce material to be dried into said housing and to guide said material to overlie at least a portion of said roller means while permitting said material, during a substantial portion of its travel over said roller means, to float on a vapour layer surrounding said roller means and out of direct contact with said roller means, and the means for applying heat to the roller means sufficient to vapourize moisture contained within the material to be dried and to create a layer of vapour between the material and the portio of the roller periphery which would otherwise be contacted at any given time by the material while wet.
2. Drying apparatus as claimed in Claim 1, wherein said heating means is a gas burner positioned to direct its flame of combustion against a peripheral portion of the roller means*

Drying apparatus as claimed in Claim 2, wherein said roller means comprises at least two said rollers, and wherein means are provided to transfer and direct hot air which is generated as a result of gas combustion adjacent the peripher of one roller from the zone of combustion On to a portio of the materia which is at any one time passing around a peripheral portio of the other roller.

Drying apparatus as claimed In Claim 3, wherein said means comprises a hot air transfer duct which is in communication with the zone of combustion adjacent one said roller and with a hood which is disposed adjacent the periphery of another said roller, the duct incorporating an air transfer impeller.
5. A drying apparatus as claimed in Claim 4, wherein a conduit is connected with a duct for delivery into the duct of a supplementary volume of air from an external source.
6. » A drying apparatus as claimed in Claim 5, including means associated with the conduit for preheating the supplementary volume of air.
7. A drying apparatus as claimed in Claim 4, wherein a said hood is disposed adjacent the peripheral portion of each roller about which the material passes.

A drying apparatus as claimed in Claim 3, wherein the rollers are engaged about a portion of their periphery by a pair of endless driving wires spaced apart by a distance greater than the width of said material, the wires being passed through the housing and around the rollers in a serpentine fashion, and the wires being driven to impart rotational motion to the rollers by a motor.
9. The drying apparatus of Claim 1 wherein said heating means is positioned externally of said roller and is directed to heat the uncovered periphery of said roller to effect direct heating thereof.
10. The drying apparatus of Claim 9 wherein said heating means is a gas burner positioned to direct its1 flame against the uncovered periphery of said roller.
11. A method of drying a moisture laden web of material, the method comprising supporting and transporting a length of such web through a housing by way of at least one roller which is located within the housing, and applying heat to the roller to an extent sufficient to vaporize moisture contained within the material to be dried and to create a layer of vapor between the material and the portion of the roller periphery which would otherwise be contacted at any given time by the material while wet- 42238/2
12. The method of Claim 11 wherein said heat is applied to said roller by directing the flame of a gas . . . . burner directly against said roller.
13. The method of Claim 11 wherei said roller is heated to a temperature of above 155°C»
14. A drying apparatus substantially as shown in the accompanying drawings substantially as hereinbefore described with reference thereto.
