1. A process for the preparation of saturated a-chloro aliphatic acids having up to 12 carbon atoms, in which the corresponding acid anhydride is first brominated with a small amount of bromine and then chlorinated wL th the appropriate amount of chlorine the reaction product being an admixture of the corresponding α-chloro acyl chloride and the α-chloro aliphaticacid is either subjected to hydrolysis or to a separating process by which the α-chloro acyl chloride is separated from the α-chloro aliphatic acid.
2. A process according to Claim 1, wherein the amount of bromine is about 0.5-3$ of the anhydride used.
3. A process according to Claim 2, wherein said amount is about 2%.
4. A process according to any of Claims 1 to 3» wherein the reaction temperature does not exceed 120°.
5. A proce^5 according to any of Claims 1-4, wherein the α-chloro acyl chloride and the α-chloro aliphatic acid are separated from each other by way of distillation.
6. A process for the preparation of saturated α-chloro aliphatic acids having up to 12 carbon atoms substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the Examples.
7. A process according to any of Claims 1 to 6, wherein the mixture obtained after the chlorination is reacted with an alcohol.
8. Saturated a-chloro aliphatic acids having up to 12 carbon atoms whenever prepared by the process according ¾> any of Claims 1-6.
9. Saturated α-chloro acyl chlorides having up to 12 carbon atoms whenever prepared by the process according to any of Claims 1-6.
10.Esters of saturated α-chloro aliphatic acid having up to 12 carbon atoms in the alkanoyl group whenever prepared from acids
