Claims (42)

Claims:
1. A combination 1n or for a battery-electric motor vehicle comprising at least one generator unit electrically connected to and adapted to charge at least one traction battery powering the vehicle when said generator 1s driven, and an axle mechanism comprising an axle housing Including a differential housing, a differential gear n said housing drivlngly connected by one or more half-shafts to one or more road wheels, the arrangement being such that said at least one generator Is operationally mounted on or adjacent said axle housing and Is drivlngly connected by any suitable means to a power take-off means of, or directly driven by, said differential gear.
2. The combination as claimed 1n claim 1 comprising a generator or generators mounted upon the axle housing or contained In said vehicle, belt or chain means drivlngly connected to said generator or generators, pulley or sprocket means drivlngly connected to a power take off gear of shaft mounted upon the axle housing at a point where a propellor shaft Is normally fitted and drivlngly connected thereto by means of a universal joint or gear.
3. The combination as claimed In claim 2 wherein the power take off gear and said universal Joint or gear, are Integral.
4. The combination as claimed In claim 3 wherein said pulley or sprocket means the universal joint or gear and the power take off gear, are Integral.
5. The combination as claimed In an of claims 1-4 wherein the pulley or sprocket means drives a countershaft and thence a plurality of generators mounted upon a platform or .sub frame or contained within the vehicle. 39 ^01/3

The combination as claimed 1n any of claims 1-4 wherein the power take-off gear drives a planetary or other suitable type of gear train housed 1n a casing or Is Integral with the axle casing and wherein about the periphery of the said gear are drlvlngly connected pulleys, sprockets or direct generators or other unit or component drives.

The combination as claimed 1n any of claims 1-6 wherein there 1s provided a plurality of power take off points adjacently situated on the axle housing or at an angle disposed about the periphery of the axle housing and a plurality of power take off gears and pulleys or sprockets or other means are fitted thereto.

The combination as claimed 1n any of claims 1-7 wherein when a power take off or drive means, a motor or driving pro-pellor shaft or shaft or gear, 1s fitted to the normal propellor shaft point on the axle housing, an additional driving face or point 1s provided at an angle to said power take off or drive means 1n the periphery of the axle housing and 1n the same axis.
9. A vehicle as claimed 1n any of claims 1-8 wherein front and rear ^axles of the vehicle provide power take off points and wherein gears and pulleys or sprockets or other drive means are fitted.
10. A vehicle as claimed 1n any of claims 1-9 wherein there are tandem axles which may be provided with an nterconnecting differential and wherein power take off points are provided on one or both axles and where gears and pulleys or sprockets or other drive means are provided.
11. A vehicle as claimed 1n claim 10 wherein speed ncreasing gearing provides power take off points.

A vehicle or axle mechanism as claimed 1n any of claims 1-11 wherein a propellor shaft of any length, fitted with a universal or other gear 1s fitted and transmits drive to a train 39401/2 \ ■ of gears contained 1n a housing or casing, provided with adequate support, and wherein one or a number of drive mounting faces for pulleys, sprockets, other units or components Is provided and wherein a clutch may be provided between the power take off point or points on the axle housing and the gear housing containing the gearing Is adapted to be lubricated by a pump driven off the gearing thus housed and driven.
13. A vehicle or axle mechanism as claimed 1n any of claims 1-12 wherein a fluid flywheel Is provided 1n the power take off gearing or at any point 1n the drive.
14. A vehicle or axle mechanism as claimed 1n any of claims 1-13 wherein overdrive gearing 1s provided.
15. A vehicle or axle mechanism as claimed 1n any of claims 1-14 wherein manual, automatic, electrical, or air, or hydraulic fluid, or any combination of forms of control of the power take off arrangement may be Incorporated and connected thereto a lever or 1 evers for means of control .
16. A vehicle or axle mechanism as claimed 1n any of claims 1-15 wherein a propellor shaft transmits drive to a gear casing housing suitable gearing for both front and rear axles, the said casing may be common to both drives or separate casings housing suitable gearlngg provided.
17. A vehicle or axle mechanism as claimed 1n any of claims 1-16 wherein two or more shafts transmit drives, running 1n parallel or otherwise fitted, to a common or separate casings from tandem axles or other axles.
18. A vehicle or axle mechanism as claimed 1n any of claims 1-17 wherein two or more shafts transmit drives running 1n parallel or otherwise fitted to a common or separate gear casings from both the front and rear axles from tandem or other axles. 394Q1/2 v,
19. A vehicle or axle mechanism as claimed in any of claims 1-18 wherein the power take off gear arrangement may drive a layshaft and/or countershaft.
20. A vehicle or axle mechanism as claimed 1n any of claims 1-19 further comprising means of reducing, Increasing and or changing the speed of gears or gear trains.

An axle mechanism 1 n or for a vehicle as claimed In any of claims 1-20 wherein a differential gear 1s substituted by one' half shaft mounted 1n floating bearing and is drivlngly connected to the road or track wheel or to a driven gear driving the road or track wheel and drivlngly connected to the said half shaft which 1s drivlngly connected to a gear at the other end and a power take off gear which 1s drivlngly connected to or meshing with said gear, a pulley, of a constant or of a variable rad11, or spocket, or other means, drivlngly connected thereto, mounted upon the axle housing at the point where a propellor shaft normally 1s fitted, or other point and drivlngly connected thereto by means of a universal joint or other suitable gear, a generator mounted upon the axle housing gr upon a platform or sub frame or contained 1n the vehicle, a belt or chain or other drive means drivlngly connected to said generator and pulley or sprocket, electric connections between the said generator and battery, 1n a vehicle powered by the battery.

A vehicle or axle mechanism as claimed 1n any of claims 1-21 wtoereilB^a differential gear 1s substituted by two half shafts mounted n floating bearings transmitting power from the road or track wheels or a pair of gears drivlngly connected to the road or track wheels and drivlngly connected to the two half shafts and the two half shafts are drivlngly connected to ears, s llned or keyed or otherwise connected, to the Inner 39401/3, or other gear 1s fitted and wherein one or two take off power points and gears may be provided mounted adjacently or at any angle to and In the axis of the gearing dr1v1ng1y connecting the two half shafts about the periphery of the axle housing, or other axis, with suitable gearing.
23. A vehicle or axle mechanism as claimed In any of the preceding claims wherein Idler or satellite gears rigidly connected to housings by brackets or other means are Incorporated.

A vehicle or axle mechanism as claimed In any of the preceding claims wherein a generator or other component 1s mounted directly upon the axle housing at the normal propellor shaft mounting location or other location with suitable gearing provision and which generator or component may be provided with a resilient mounting and secured to the axle casing by means of bolts disposed about the periphery of the base or flange of the generator or component passing through threaded holes or holes and each secured with a nut and locking device, or by any other means.
25. A vehicle or axle mechanism as claimed 1n any of the preceding claims wherein a clutch mechanism or mechanisms are Incorporated at any point of the train of drive or drives.
26. A vehicle or axle mechanism as claimed In any of the preceding claims wherein there 1s provided electrical and fluid circuitry.
27. A vehicle or axle mechanism as claimed 1n any of the preceding claims wherein lubricant directors and pickups preferably plastic and non abrasive and rotable or otherwise are Incorporated.
28. A vehicle as claimed 1n any of the preceding claims powered by storage batteries wherein one generator 1s connected by suitable electrical means to a bus bar to which are connected batteries connected 1n series. 39401/3 \
29. A vehicle as claimed 1n claims 1-27 powered by storage batteries and wherein a plurality of generators are provided and are separately connected by suitable electrical means to each battery.
30. A vehicle powered by storage batteries as claimed 1n claim 28 wherein a plurality of generators are provided and connected to a common bus bar to which by suitable electrical means 1s connected the batteries connected 1n series.
31. A vehicle as claimed 1n cnay of claims 1-27 and wherein a plurality of generators are provided and connected to a common bus bar by suitable electrical means and to which are connected the batteries connected 1n parallel.
32. Apparatus for continuously charging the batteries of an electrically driven vehicle substantially as described hereinbefore.
33. A vehicle or axle mechanism as claimed 1n any of the preceding claims wherein generators and other units or components are provided with resilient mountings and friction or clutch drives at one or any point In the respective drive trains.
34. A vehicle as claimed 1n any of the preceding claims powered by an electric motor wherein a generator s provided and a storage battery or batteries and a suitable electrical connection between the motor and the battery or batteries and battery or batteries and generator.
35. A vehicle as claimed 1n any of the preceding claims wherein a generator 1s provided and a storage battery and a number of electric motors driving the wheels thereof at the wheel location or other location and a su tsble electrical connection 1s provided between the generator and battery and the battery and electric motors. 39401/3 Λ

A vehicle as claimed In any of the preceding claims wherein a plurality of generators and a plurality of batteries are provided, ea¾h battery connected to a separate generator and an electric motor or motors driving the wheel or wheels at the wheel or wheels location or other location and suitable electrical connections being provided between the positive terminals of the generators and batteries and the motors.

A vehicle as claimed In any of the preceding claims wherein a plurality of batteries and generators are provided and wherein the generators are connected to a common bus bar and the batteries are connected In series, connected thereto by suitable electrical means and suitably electrically connected to a motor or motors.

A vehicle as claimed 1n any of the preceding claims wherein a plurality of batteries and a plurality of generators are provided and wherein the generators are connected to a common bus bar and the batteries which are connected In parallel are connected thereto by suitable electrical means and suitably electrically connected to a motor or motors.
39. A vehicle as claimed In any of the preceding claims which 1s driven by a hydraulic motor or motors or which 1s hydraull-cally and electrically powered.
40. A vehicle as claimed 1n any of the preceding claims wherein a cut out switch Is provided by means of a junction box or a switch box arrangement Incorporated 1n the circuit between the batteries and the motor power supply.
41. A vehicle as claimed 1n any of the preceding claims further comprising automatic control, to cause the vehicle to operate between given points controlled by computer, by programming by a radio or any other means. 39401/3

A vehicle as claimed In any of the preceding claims which 1s provided with a motor or motors, electric or hydraulic motor when electrically powered, driving directly and mounted upon a driving face on the axle housing or other location, or driving a propellor shaft or shafts or driving gear or gears through a gearbox or gearboxes or gear trains or other suitable gearing.
