Description

AN APPARATUS FOR THE L0Q3ENIN& OF TYRES FROM THE FELLOES OF WHEELS OF MOTOR VEHICLES I*?**? ο»ρΊ<ηπο CPJ^P:. -mnm'? tpnn An Apparatus for the Loosening of Tyres Prom the Felloes of Wheels of Motor Tehicles.
The present invention relates to an apparatus for loosening the tyres on felloes of motor vehicle wheels, more particularly the device is destined for the removal of great tyres, as are used on heavy load carrying vehicles or tractors and the like.
It is well known that such loosening of the tyres for the removal and exchange of an inner tube is a most cumbersome process. The wheel - in order to remove the tyre - has to be dismounted from the vehicle and the latter has to be lifted up by means of jack or otherwise.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a device which quickly and without expenditure of force removes the tyre from the wheel, without dismounting the latter from the vehicle in question.
According to the invention the new device comprises a supporting frame on which is mounted the fluid container of an hydraulic jack and from which rises upwardly an arm-' carrying a yoke shaped member attached to the said arm pivotally and turnably about its axis, the cylinder and piston of the hydraulic jack being fixedly attached to one of the free ends of the arms of the yoke, a flexible conduit being provided connecting the cylinder with the fluid container. These and further features will become clear from the following description which has reference to the annexed drawings. In the drawings the new device Fig. 2 is a plan view of the new device with the wheel and tyre 1 shown in section. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a detail.
Turning first to Fig. 1, a supporting structure 1 which may be a platform or which may be a grid is provided with a front wheel 2 and two rear wheels 3 (only one of which is seen in Fig. 1.) On the platform is fixed a container 4 which contains oil or another liquid conventionally used in hydraulic jacks. From the supporting member 1 rises an arm 5 which is fixedly attached to the supporting member on top of wheel 2 and which rises at an angle to the horizontal. To the arm 5 is pivotally affixed by means of a pin 6 a lever 7 which, as can be seen in Fig. 2 is bent double at its end to embrace the arm 5 so that the pin 6 passes through the bent portion of the lever 7 and through the arm 5. To the bent portion, and more particularly to the web thereof, is affixed turnably, by" means of a pin 8, a yoke member 9, having two free ends 9a and 9b. The yoke can turn about the pin 8 as indicated by the arrow x, and raised or lowered by pushing dow or .lifting the end of lever 7. In order to perform this the end 7a is provided with a gri as seen in Fig. 1. By swinging down the lever 7, the yoke Θ is raised and by lifting the end 7a, the yoke is lowered. The yoke member 9 is fixed in position on the arm 5 by means of a chain 11 which is affixed to lever 7 and the links of which can be hooked into a hook 12 provided on the arm 5. Against turning about the bolt 8, the yoke is secured by means of a spring actuated bolt 10 portion of the yoke. To the free end 9b of the yoke 9 is fixedly attached the cylinder 12 of an hydraulic jack, the piston 13 of which emerges from the cylinder 12.
The piston 13 has at its end a presser plate 14. At the rear side of the presser plate 14 is provided a shackle 15 in which slides a plate member 16. The purpose of the latter will become clear from the following description. The piston 12 is connected by a flexible conduit 17 with the container 4 for pressure fluid. The hydraulic jack is operated by a handle H rising from the container 4 and designed to actuate, the pump thereof in a known way.
The device is shown in Pigs. 1 and 2 in position in relation to the wheel which as a whole is indicated by the letter ¥ while its tyre is indicated by T.
In order to remove the tyre T from the wheel ¥ the device is wheeled into the vicinity of the wheel ¥ so that the tire and the felloe come to be positioned within the confines of the yoke member 9 (See Fig. 2). Now the presser plate 14 is applied to the side of the tire T (See Fig. 2) , and the jack is actuated by means of the handle H which by moving to and fro pumps pressure liquid through the conduit 17 into the cylinder 12. Thus pressure is brought to act on the tyre wall loosening the grip of the felloe onto the edge of the tire. If this is not sufficient the procedure is repeated one or two times at other points of the tyre, to which end the wheel is turned, after relieving the pressure on the tyre wall. Once the tyre has become loosened it is possible to pull out the inner tube and to In especially hard cases, after initially loosening the hold of the felloe rim on the tyre, as indicated above the slide 16 can be used moving it in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 3. Thereby the area of the pressure plate is enlarged and pressure can be exerted on a larger area of the tyre wall.
After loosening of the tyre the pressure relieving valve of the container 4 is opened, as customary with hydraulic jacks, whereupon the piston is retracted into the cylinder by springs 18.
In case it should be desired to exert pressure on the other side of the tyre,- i.e. on the opposite wall thereof the wheeled carriage 1 is retracted from the wheel, the blocking bolt 10 is withdrawn and the yoke 9 is turned about the pin 8 through 180°, so that the arm 9b with the jack comes to lie on the opposite side when the supporting frame is again wheeled in position on the tyre.
Experience has shown that the loosening of the largest tyres for the removal of inner tubes can be performed within minutes, while the same operation took much longer, especially in the case of tractors and heavy load vehicles. Ιφ can be understood that for loosening the tyre and removal of the inner tubes it is no longer necessary to dismount the huge wheels of heavy load carrying vehicles which alone is a time consuming and sometimes a rather dangerous work in view of the size and weight of these wheels
