Description

For selectively moving the friction disc 504 into engagement with the driving disc 195 or into engagement with the clutch bracket 50 1 a positioning is The fork 506 has a yoke 508 upstanding legs 509 extend ing up opposite sides of the bracket 501 and friction disc 50 mounting bracket 510 is carried by the bracket 501 and its legs 511 extend out opposite sides the frictio disc 504 and above the centerline The extending ends of legs 511 pivotally mount the uppermost ends of the legs of oke 508 A positioning roll 512 is rotatabl carried by each of the legs 509 just below the bracket 510 The rolls 512 extend inwardly from the yoke 508 between the drive plate 503 the brake plate 505 adjacent the centerline it will be seen that when the fork 506 is pivoted clockwise as seen 21 the rolls 512 will engage the drive plate and force the same into engagement with the driving disc 195v wise wheri the fork is pivoted counterclockwise as seen i the rolls 512 will engage the brake plate 505 and force the same into engagement with bracket 501 actuating arm 514 extends downwardly from the yoke 50 8 for pivoting the yoke 508 to engage or disengage the clutch brake mechanism 500 An engaging solenoid 515 and disengaging solenoid 516 are mounted below the clutch mechanism 500 on an extension 518 carried by the bracket 188 The arm 514 extends down and is pivotally mounted on a connector connected between the plunger 520 associated with the engaging solenoid 515 the 521 associated with engaging solenoid and the plunger 521 associated with the disengagin solenoid insufficientOCRQuality

Claims (19)

1. A method of closing and labelling an egg carton which comprises a base member, a cover member pivotally mounted on the base member and locking means for retaining the cover in a closed position on the base member, the method comprising transporting an egg carton past a first work station at which the cover is pivoted into its locked and closed position on the base member, a second work station at which an outer surface of the carton is heated, and a third work station at which a label is applied to the heated surface of the carton from a continuous length of label material, the label being applied by moving the continuous length of label material toward the carton in the direction of movement of the carton so that the free end of the label is applied to the heated surface of the carton, pressing the label into position on the said heated surface and subsequently separating the label from the continuous length of label material.
2. A method as claimed in claim 1 in which a label is partially severed from the continuous length of label material prior to it being applied to the egg carton.
3. A method as claimed in claim 2 in which the partially severed label is separated from the continuous length of label material by arresting the relative movement between the carton and the length of label material.
4. A method as claimed in any one of the preceding claims in which at the first work station a force is exerted on the cover of the carton to press the cover toward the base, and a separate force is exerted on at least a portion of the rim of the cover to press the cover into its locked 0
5. Apparatus for closing and labelling an egg carton which comprises a base member, a cover member pivotally mounted on the base member and locking means for retaining the cover in a closed position on the base member, the apparatus comprising means for transporting an egg carton through a predetermined path past a plurality of work stations, the work stations including a first work station at which the cover is pivoted into its locked and closed position on the base member, a second work station at which an outer surface of the carton is heated and a third work station at which a label is applied to the heated surface of the carton from a continuous length of label material, the third work station including means for moving the continuous length of label material toward the carton in the direction of movement of the carton so that the free end of the label is applied to the heated surface of the carton, means for pressing the label into position on the heated surface of the carton and means for separating the label from the continuous length of label material.
6. Apparatus as claimed in claim 5 in which the means for pressing the label into position on the heated surface of the carton includes heater means. 0
7. Apparatus as claimed in claim 5 or 6 which the second work station includes a roller the outer surface of which is adapted to be heated for heating an outer surface of the carton.
8. Apparatus as claimed in any one of claims 5 to 7 which includes sensing means for determining the delivery of one label from the continuous length of label material and cutter means responsive to the sensing means for cutting
9. Apparatus as claimed in any one of claims 5 to 8 in which the third work station includes dispensing means which comprises, support means for supporting a continuous length of label material, second sensing means for determining the presence of a carton at said dispensing means, feed means responsive to said first sensing means for dispensing the continuous length of label material from the support means a to^carton as the carton is transported along its predetermined path, and third sensing means for determing the dispensing of a predetermined length of the continuous strip of labels to the carton, said feed means being responsive to the second sensing means to terminate the dispensing of the labels to the carton.
10, Apparatus as claimed in claim 9 in which the feed means of the dispensing means includes a first roller, a second roller in fractional engagement with the first roller, a third roller, a fourth roller in side-by-side relationship with the third roller, at least one continuous band positioned about the first roller and about the third roller, at least one other continuous band positioned about the second roller and about the fourth roller, means for rotating the third and fourth rollers, and means for rotating the first and second rollers independently of the first and second rollers.
11. Apparatus as claimed in claim 10 in which the first and second rollers have annular grooves about their peripheries, and bearing means are positioned within the annular grooves, the bands being positioned within the annular grooves and movable about and with respect to the first and second rollers, with the third and fourth rollers.
12, Apparatus as claimed in claim 10 or 11 which includes a heated roller, at least one continuous band positioned about the heater roller and about the fourth roller and movable with the heater roller.
13, Apparatus as claimed in any one of claims 10 to 12 wherein the continuous bands are rubber coated coil springs,
14, Apparatus as claimed in any one of claims 9 to 13 which includes air flow means positioned adjacent the dispensing means for blowing air through a path to urge the loose end of the labelling material above the space to be occupied by a carton and presser means above the space to be occupied by the object for urging the labelling material onto the surface of the carton,
15, Apparatus as claimed in claim 9 in which the dispensing means includes a continuously driven drive means, feed roll means for dispensing the continuous length of label material, and clutch means for selectively connecting the feed roll means with the drive means to dispense the labels, the clutch means including a first solenoid operatively connected to the first sensing means to engage the clutch means with the driving means when a carton is present at the label dispensing means, and a second solenoid operatively connected to the second sensing means to disengage the clutch means from the drive means when a predetermined length of the continuous length of material has been dispensed to the container,
16, Apparatus as claimed in claim 15 wherein the clutch means further includes a friction means operatively connected to the feed roll means and selectively connectable to the drive means for rotating the feed roll means, and
