Description

A grounding terminal AMP INCORPORATED This invention relates to a grounding A grounding terminal according to this invention is formed from sheet and has a body including two resiliently deformable limb parts for penetrating an aperture in a grounding panel under each limb part having edge serrations adapted to scrape the aperture wall when penetrating the aperture and the body having an integral extension for connection to an electrical In one embodiment the body is generally tubular and tapered towards one end and longitudinally slotted with the limb parts formed at the edges of the In another embodiment opposite side parts of the body define the limb parts of the each limb part being of the limb parts being arranged with the apices of the directed towards each Preferably the integral extension of the body comprises a ferrule for crimping connection to the electrical An assembly of an apertured grounding panel and a minal as defined according to this has the limb parts of the terminal received in the panel aperture the edge serrations having scraped the aperture of this invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying in 1 is a perspective view of a grounding 2 is a view of one end portion of the terminal of 3 is a top plan view of the terminal of 4 is a sectional view of the terminal of 1 penetrating a panel 5 is a diagrammatic view of a section taken along 7 is a perspective view of a third grounding 8 is a sectional view of the terminal of 7 penetrating a panel 9 is a diagrammatic view of a section taken along lines of 10 is a diagrammatic view taken along lines of is a perspective view of another grounding 12 is a side view of the terminal of positioned ready for penetrating a panel and is a side view of the terminal of penetrating the panel The terminal of Figures 1 to 5 is formed from a sheet metal blank folded to define a ferrule portion 9 from one end of which extends a shank portion The blank is rolled up at the end of the shank portion 8 remote from the ferrule portion 9 to form a generally tubular longitudinally slotted body 3 extending substantially perpendicularly to the shank Wings 7 are formed at the junction of the body 3 and shank portion 8 to lie outwardly of the body 3 in alignment with the shank tion The longitudinal edge portions of the slot of the member 3 are diverged outwardly of the slot form limb parts 1 and Saw serrations 4 are cut along part of the length of the free edges of the limb parts 1 2 and projections 5 are pressed wardly of the body 3 on the side remote from the serrations A protrusion 6 is pressed out of the body 3 on the same side as In the terminal is hammered or otherwise forced into a grounding panel aperture 10 in a sheet metal panel 1 1 using the wings 7 as Initiall the parts 1 and 2 are spaced apart hut they move resilien towards each other to allow the body 3 to penetrate the panel aperture 10 but then they more apart once the body 3 has penetrated the panel aperture 5 The terminal is stopped from passing through the panel aperture 10 by the protrusion 6 while the jections 5 the serrations together with the resilience of the parts 1 and 2 prevent it from passing back out of the panel aperture The serrations in passing through the contact the wall defining the aperture 10 and scrape i this scraping action cleans the area of electrical so ensuring good electrical conductivity between a conductor crimped to the ferrule 9 and its grounding panel 1 The terminal of Figures 1 to can be by omitting the protrusion 6 when wings 7 will serve as the sole stop means to prevent the terminal passing through the aperture 10 in addition to acting as the The wings 7 can themselves be reliance then being placed on the taper of the body 3 to prevent the terminal passing through th panel The serrations 4 can be cut along the entire length of the limb parts 1 and The body 3 of the t erminal of 6 is by rollin up a sheet metal blank in the manner described but an edge opening 1 2 is cut in the side remote from the serrations 4 and an extension 13 formed on each of limb parts 1 and 2 adjacent the junction of the body 3 and the shank portion The opening 1 and the extension 13 cooperate to limit movement of the terminal wider portion The end section of the shank portion remote from the portion is formed into a ferrule for connection to an electrical Two spaced limb parts 16 are formed by bending opposed tapered side parts of the portion perpendicularly to the main part of that portion 14 constitutes the body of the The limb parts 16 taper away from the main p art of the body and are in the apices of the being directed towards each other and as shown in A lateral recess is cut adjacent the root of each of the limb parts and the serrations 17 are cut in the opposed sides of the limb parts from the recess 18 towards the free ends of the limb In the terminal of Figures 7 to 10 is hammered or otherwise forced into a grounding panel aperture themain part of the body 14 being used as the The limb parts 16 as springs giving a resilient action and maintaining outwardly directed pressure so forcing the serrations to contact and scrape the wall defining the panel aperture 10 as the limb parts of the body are caused to penetrate the Movement of the terminal into the panel aperture is stopped by shoulders defining the recesses 18 which engage one side of the The serrations 17 are shaped as ratchet teeth for ment with the opposite side of the panel and are staggered on opposed sides of each of the limb parts to provide firm retention of the terminal whatever the thickness of the The terminal of Figures to is a of that just in which the main part of body is curved outwardly from a sheet metal an oblong opening is cut into the main part a to act as a v 12 and the limb parts 16 to spread outwardly in the panel aperture which results in improved retention of the terminal in the The weakened zone in main part enables the main part substantially to be flattened after the terminal has penetrated the The embodiments of grounding terminal just described can be used with facility by labour and without special The serrations of the terminal scrape the wall defining the grounding panel aperture so cleaning which is an especial advantage where electrical contact is The terminal can be by automatic machinery in successive forming steps using metal which is sufficiently hard to give the terminal limb parts the required degree of resilient yet sufficiently malleable to permit an electrical conductor to be crimped or otherwise secured to the insufficientOCRQuality
