Description
The present invention relates to shutters for windows and doors, and more particularly to that kind of shutter which comprises a four-sided frame in which are turnably arranged a number of slats, parallel to one another, and connected with each other by a bar which extends normal to the longitudinal direction of the slats themselves. By moving the said bar up or down in the direction of its length the slats are being turned about their longitudinal axes. When the slats are so turned that their edges overlap, the shutter is closed. When they are so turned that there wider faces are in the horizontal gaps come into existence between the individual slats and the shutter is open.
In order to bring about the turning of the slats by means of the said bar usually a handle is attached to the latter which juts out into the respective room, from the plane in which the slats are in the closed position. This handle jutting out into the space of the room is both unsightly and inconvenient since it forms an obstacle and persons frequently hit against it.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a construction for opffling and closing the shutters wherein the said handle is no longer in the position described above and movement of the mechanism operating the said bar is in a plane parallel to the plane of the shutter and only a very short distance therefrom.
According to the invention, there is provided a mechanism for moving the bar actuating the individual slats of a shutter of a type referred to, the said mechanism and swinging in a plane which is parallel to the plane of the shutter and a short distance therefrom, the said lever being pivotally connected by a connecting rod with one leg of an angle shaped link, while the second leg of said link is pivotally connected with a second connecting rod at one end of the latter, while the second end thereof is pivotally connected to the said bar,.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the first named lever is angle shaped while the second connecting rod is of a bent shape, its two ends being set off against one another.
The invention will now be described with reference to the annexed drawings wherein Pi . 1 shows in a frontal fractional view a shutter equipped with a mechanism according to the invention in closed position^ while Fig. 2 is an elevational section of the portions shown in Pig. 1.
Pigs* 3 and 4 are like views showing the shutter in open position* Pig. 5 finally is a section on line Y-V of Pig. 3* Turning first to Pigs 1-4» the shutter comprises a frame 1 in which are movable in the conventional way the slats 2. These latter are connected by the bar 3 which can be moved up and down. The connection is brought about by links 4 each of which is pivotally connected to the bar and in the earne way to one slat. Thus each slat is connected in this way by a link 4 to the bar 3« In order to bring about the up and down movemen of bar 3 which actuates the slats a new mechanism has been developed. This mechanism comprises a lever 10 which is fulcrumed at 11 on to of a distance late 20 to the frame I the single purpose of having the lever 10 at a small distance from the frame. Theoretically it could be affixed to the frame directly but then friction would exist between the frame 1 and the lever during the movement of the latter* The lever 10 is a flat, angle shaped piece of metal and has a handle 10a. At the knee of the angle shaped lever 10 there is pivotally affixed to it a connecting rod 13 which at 14 is connected with an angle shaped link"15. The connecting point, or pivot 14 is positioned on one leg of the link piece 15 while the second leg extending at right angles to the first leg into the space ascribed by frame 1, is connected pivotally at 16 with a crooked connecting rod 17 the two ends of which lie in two different planes. The opposite end of the connecting rod 17 is turnably connected by means of a screwbolt 18 with the bar 3* The new mechanism functions as follows, when the lever is swung in the direction of the arrow in Pig. 1 by pushing or pulling downwardly, the lever turns about the fixed fulcrum U. As a result the connecting rod 13 is pulled downwardly with the effect that the angle piece 15 has to follow. How the second leg of the angle piece which is attached to the second connecting rod 17 causes the latter to move in downward direction, substantially in the direction of its lo * itudinal extension thereby taking along in the desired downward direction thd bar 3 whereby the slats are opened. The movement of the lever 10, as can be seen from Fig.3 is through 180°, but always in a plane parallel to the plane of the shutter and substantially no parts of the new mechanism jut out into the room to form an undesirable obstacle in the latter.
It will be seen that the new mechanism is of great convenience and pleasant appearance*. It can be manufactured at low cost since the parts can be stamped from sheet metal of sufficient thickness and can easily be assembled and mounted to the frame of the shutter.
Claims (3)
1. * A mechanism for moving the bar actuating the "the individual slats of a shutter of a- type referred to< in "the opening paragraph of this specification, the said mechanism comprising a lever fulcrumed to the frame of the shutter and swinging in a plane which is parallel to the plane of the shutter and a short distance therefrom, the said lever being pivotally connected by a connecting rod with one leg of an angle shaped link, while the second leg of said link is pivotally connected with a second connecting rod at one end of the latter, while the second end thereof is pivotally connected to the said bar*
2. A mechanism as claimed in Claim 1 characterized thereby that the first named lever is angle shaped while the second connecting rod is of a bent shape, its two ends being set off against one another,
3. Mechanism for moving the actuating bar of shutters of the kind referred to, substantially as hereinbefore described and with reference to the accompanying drawings. —- ¾ COHE QN ZED, EK AND SPISBACH P.O. Box 1169, Tel Aviv Attorneys for Applicants
