Description
FIXATION FASTENER SYSTEM FOR DENTAL APPLIANCE FIELD OF THE INVENTION [0001] The present invention relates generally to dental implant surgery, and particularly to a fixation fastener system for fastening a dental appliance, such as a surgical guide, drill guide or temporary bridge, to oral structure in the patient’s mouth.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION [0002] Dental implant surgery includes drilling one or more bores in a jaw bone and requires a high degree of precision, particularly in the position, depth and axial orientation of the bore created. The drilling operation must also avoid undesirable interference with the patient’s nervous and muscular systems. To facilitate such precision, a custom designed surgical template or surgical guide, adapted to the patient’s mouth and the intended surgical intervention, may be used to provide a guide for the dental drill. [0003] The surgical guide can be supported on teeth, gums or bone. However, a surgical guide which is supported only by the gums is not usually successful, because the gums are soft and the surgical guide is never stable on them. In an effort to improve stability, dentists use fixation pins to stabilize the surgical guide, but it is still difficult to achieve accuracy of the position and orientation at which the surgical guide will be fixed. Similar and other difficulties exist in fixing other dental appliances, particularly temporary bridges. [0004] Accordingly, a fastener system for securely and safely fixing a dental appliance, such as a surgical guide, drill guide or temporary bridge, to oral structure in the patient’s mouth is needed.
SUMMARY [0005] The present invention seeks to provide an improved fixation fastener system for fastening a dental appliance, such as a surgical guide, drill guide or temporary bridge, to oral structure in the patient’s mouth, as is described more in detail hereinbelow. [0006] The fixation fastener system holds and at the same time fixes the gums, to prevent their movement. The fixation fastener system solves the problem of any areas in the mouth where the gums are not fixed to the bone, which in the prior art, makes it difficult to affix a dental appliance to the gums. The invention not only safely and assuredly affixes the dental appliance to the gums and bone, it enables easy removal of one dental appliance and its replacement with another dental appliance in the same place. In fact, the invention enables safe and assured fixation of the dental appliance to the bone regardless of whether there is gum or not. [0007] There is thus provided in accordance with a non-limiting embodiment of the invention a fixation fastener system including a bone fixation fastener including a head, which includes a tool interface, and a shank that extends from the head opposite to the tool interface, the shank including a threaded distal portion, and the bone fixation fastener being formed with an internal conical passageway that extends partially into the threaded distal portion, and a pin fastener including a pin head from which extends a pin shank, the pin shank including a smooth, conical distal portion that is sized to be tightly received in the internal conical passageway of the bone fixation fastener. [0008] In accordance with a non-limiting embodiment of the invention the system further includes a dental appliance that includes an internally-threaded passageway, and the pin shank includes a threaded proximal portion adjacent the pin head and proximal to the smooth, conical distal portion, and wherein the threaded proximal portion mates with the internally-threaded passageway of the dental appliance, and the smooth, conical distal portion of the pin fastener passes through the internally-threaded passageway and fits tightly into the conical passageway of the bone fixation fastener, and the threaded distal portion of the bone fixation fastener is threadingly affixable into bone in a patient’s mouth. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS [0009] The present invention will be understood and appreciated more fully from the following detailed description, taken in conjunction with the drawings in which: [0010] Fig. 1 is a simplified side-view illustration of a bone fixation fastener of a fixation fastener system, in accordance with a non-limiting embodiment of the present invention. [0013] Fig. 4 is a sectional illustration of the bone fixation fastener, showing an internal conical passageway formed in the fastener. [0014] Figs. 5A, 5B, 5C, and 5D are respectively side-view, end-view, sectional, and perspective illustrations of a dental appliance, which will be coupled to the bone fixation fastener by a pin fastener. [0015] Fig. 6 is a simplified side-view illustration of a pin fastener of the fixation fastener system, in accordance with a non-limiting embodiment of the present invention. [0016] Fig. 7 is a simplified pictorial illustration of the pin fastener which will be inserted through a mounting hole of the dental appliance and then be tightly inserted into the conical passageway of the bone fixation fastener, which has been threadingly affixed into bone in the patient’s mouth, in accordance with a non-limiting embodiment of the present invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION [0017] Reference is now made to Figs. 1 and 2, which illustrate a bone fixation fastener of a fixation fastener system, in accordance with a non-limiting embodiment of the present invention. [0018] The bone fixation fastener 10 may include a head 12, which may include a tool interface 14 (also seen in Fig. 3), such as but not limited to, a male (protruding) portion, which may be grasped by a wrench (the male portion may be hexagonal or other wrench shapes). Alternatively, the tool interface 14 may be a female portion, such as a hexagonal socket for an Allen wrench or a star socket for a Torx wrench, or a screwdriver recess or others. [0019] The bone fixation fastener 10 may include a shank 16 that extends from head opposite to the tool interface 14. The portion of head 12 adjacent shank 16 may be a convexly rounded (e.g., semi-spherical) portion 18. One of the main purposes of being round is to avoid gum injury. Shank 16 has a smooth proximal portion 20 adjacent the rounded portion 18 of head 12, and a threaded distal portion 22 adjacent the smooth proximal portion 20. One of the main purposes of smooth proximal portion 20 being smooth is to avoid gum injury. The length of threaded distal portion 22 may be selected according to the planned depth of bone fixation fastener 10 into the bone and the thickness of the bone. id="p-20" id="p-20"
id="p-20"
[0020] Reference is now made to Fig. 4, which illustrates an internal conical passageway formed in the bone fixation fastener 10. The internal conical passageway 24 may extend fully through tool interface 14, head 12, and smooth proximal portion 20 of shank 16, and partially extend into threaded distal portion 22 of shank 16. In the non-limiting illustrated embodiment, internal conical passageway 24 has a straight, cylindrical proximal portion 25 which extends partially into head 12. [0021] Bone fixation fastener 10 may be made of a medical grade stainless steel, titanium alloy or any other suitable material. [0022] Reference is now made to Figs. 5A, 5B, 5C, and 5D, which illustrate a dental appliance 30, which may be without limitation, a portion of a surgical guide, drill guide or temporary bridge. The dental appliance 30 may include an internally-threaded passageway 32 (that is, female threads). [0023] Reference is now made to Fig. 6, which illustrates a pin fastener 40 of the fixation fastener system, in accordance with a non-limiting embodiment of the present invention. [0024] The pin fastener 40 may include a pin head 42 (preferably bulbous and rounded in shape) from which extends a pin shank 44. The pin shank 44 has a threaded proximal portion 46 adjacent the pin head 42, and a smooth, conical distal portion 48 adjacent the threaded proximal portion 46. The length of smooth, conical distal portion corresponds to the length of internal conical passageway 24 of bone fixation fastener 10. The male threads of threaded proximal portion 46 mate with the female threads of internally-threaded passageway 32 of dental appliance 30. [0025] Pin fastener 40 may be made of a medical grade stainless steel, titanium alloy or any other suitable material. [0026] Reference is now made to Fig. 7, which illustrates the pin fastener 40 poised to be screwed into dental appliance 30. The smooth, conical distal portion 48 of pin fastener passes through internally-threaded passageway 32 of dental appliance 30, and the male threads of the threaded proximal portion of pin fastener 40 mate with the female threads of the internally-threaded passageway 32. The smooth, conical distal portion 48 of pin fastener 40 fits tightly into the conical passageway 24 of the bone fixation fastener 10. The threaded distal portion 22 of shank 16 of bone fixation fastener 10 is threadingly affixed into bone in the patient’s mouth. The wide diameter of the head 12 of bone fixation fastener 10 safely presses the rounded portion 18 of head 12 against the gums. [0027] The fixation fastener system holds and at the same time fixes the gums, to prevent their movement. The fixation fastener system solves the problem of any areas in the mouth where the gums are not fixed to the bone, which in the prior art, makes it difficult to affix a dental appliance to the gums. The invention not only safely and assuredly affixes the dental appliance to the gums and bone, it enables easy removal of one dental appliance and its replacement with another dental appliance.
