FIELD OF THE INVENTION id="p-1" id="p-1" id="p-1" id="p-1" id="p-1" id="p-1" id="p-1"
[001] The present invention relates generally to optical fiber connectors. More specifically, the present invention relates to optical fibers connector having dual purpose connectable end.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION id="p-2" id="p-2" id="p-2" id="p-2" id="p-2" id="p-2" id="p-2"
[002] Optical fiber connectors are small devices located at the end of an optical fiber, for enabling quicker connection and disconnection to and from external devices. The connectors mechanically couple and align the cores of fibers so light can pass. Optimal connectors will lose very little light due to reflection or misalignment of the fibers. There are about 100 different types of fiber optic connectors in the market. id="p-3" id="p-3" id="p-3" id="p-3" id="p-3" id="p-3" id="p-3"
[003] As optical fibers replace metallic fibers as the main communication line in both general and domestic applications, it became necessary to insert (e.g., thread) optical fibers inside communication conduits such as tubes inserted into walls. Threading delicate items such as optical fibers in communication conduits is challenging. In order to maintain as little loses as possible, the end of the optical fiber is polished to a very high degree (e.g., ADS 0.05 microns). If threaded into a communication conduit having any one of the known type of connectors, the end will lose it’s optical properties and will require a new polishing, on site. High degree of optical polishing in sites, such as, construction sites, is difficult to achieve and very expensive. id="p-4" id="p-4" id="p-4" id="p-4" id="p-4" id="p-4" id="p-4"
[004] Accordingly, there is a need for a simple solution that will enable threading optical fibers in communication conduits while maintaining and securing the highly polished surface at the fiber’s end.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION id="p-5" id="p-5" id="p-5" id="p-5" id="p-5" id="p-5" id="p-5"
[005] Some aspects of the invention may be directed to an optical fiber connector, comprising: a hollow gripping element configured to grip an optical fiber threaded in the hollow gripping element; and at least one of: an end connector configured to connect the optical fiber to an external device; and an end pulling cap configured to be inserted and pulled inside a conduit. In some embodiments, the hollow gripping element may include a 1 end pulling cap. id="p-6" id="p-6" id="p-6" id="p-6" id="p-6" id="p-6" id="p-6"
[006] In some embodiments, the hollow gripping element may include a gripping housing; a ferrule extender; a ferrule flange; a spring; and a connectable housing comprising the connectable portion. In some embodiments, the optical fiber connector may further include a tube; and a hollow cover. id="p-7" id="p-7" id="p-7" id="p-7" id="p-7" id="p-7" id="p-7"
[007] In some embodiments, end connector is one of: LC connector, SC connector, FC connector, ST connector, SMA connector, DMI connector, MU connector, E-2000 connector, D4 connector, Biconic connector, MPO connector and MTRJ connector. In some embodiments, the connectable portion may include at least one of: a thread, a clip, a recess, and a pin.

For example, the dimensions of some of the elements may be exaggerated relative to other elements for clarity. [0013] Some aspects of the invention are directed to a connector for optical fibers having dual purpose. In some embodiments, the connector may include an end connector configured to connect the optical fiber to any known device or additional fiber. The end connector can be any end connector known in the art, such as, LC connector, FC connector, E-2000 connector, etc.). In some embodiments, the end connector may be replaced with an end pulling cap configured to be inserted and pulled inside a conduit, while maintaining and securing the highly polished surface at the fiber’s end. id="p-14" id="p-14" id="p-14" id="p-14" id="p-14" id="p-14" id="p-14"
[0014] Reference is now made to Fig. 1 which is an illustration of an exploded view of an optical fiber connector according to some embodiments of the invention. A connector 20 may include a hollow gripping element 12 (illustrated also in Figs. 2A and 2B), configured to grip an optical fiber 15 threaded in hollow gripping element 12, and at least one of: an end connector 9 configured to connect the optical fiber to an external device; and an end pulling cap 7 configured to be inserted and pulled inside a communication conduit. In some embodiments, hollow gripping element 12 may include a connectable portion 14 configured to be connected to either one of: end connector 9 and end pulling cap 7. id="p-15" id="p-15" id="p-15" id="p-15" id="p-15" id="p-15" id="p-15"
[0015] In some embodiments, hollow gripping element 12 may include: a gripping housing 2, a ferrule extender 3, a ferrule flange 4, a spring 6; and a connectable housing 1. Gripping housing 2, may grip (e.g., fixatedly hold) optical fiber 15. Connectable housing 1 may include connectable portion 14. In some embodiments, connectable portion 14 may include at least one of: a thread, a clip, a recess, a pin, or any connecting part that is configured to be connected to and disconnect from either one of: end connector 9 and end pulling cap 7. In some embodiments, gripping housing 2, ferrule extender 3, ferrule flange 4, spring 6; and connectable housing 1 may be made from any suitable material, for example, various polymers and various alloys. id="p-16" id="p-16" id="p-16" id="p-16" id="p-16" id="p-16" id="p-16"

[0018] In some embodiments, end pulling cap 7 may be made from a ridged material such as, steel, and may be designed to hold a polished end of optical fiber 15 in a secured position inside pulling cap 7. Therefore, during the pulling of an optical fiber connected to connector assembled with pulling cap 7 (e.g., inside a conduit), the polished end of optical fiber 15 will not engage with any internal portion of pulling cap 7. In some embodiments, pulling cap 7 may further include a pulling hole 13 (better illustrated in Fig. 2B) to be connected to a pulling cored to be pulled/threaded inside a communication conduit. id="p-19" id="p-19" id="p-19" id="p-19" id="p-19" id="p-19" id="p-19"

Claims (5)

1. An optical fiber connector, comprising: a hollow gripping element configured to grip an optical fiber threaded in the hollow gripping element; and at least one of: an end connector configured to connect the optical fiber to an external device; and an end pulling cap configured to be inserted and pulled inside a conduit, wherein the hollow gripping element comprises a connectable portion configured to be connected to either one of: the end connector and the end pulling cap.
2. The optical fiber connector of claim 1, wherein the hollow gripping element comprises: a gripping housing; a ferrule extender; a ferrule flange; a spring; and a connectable housing comprising the connectable portion.
3. The optical fiber connector further comprises: a tube; and a hollow cover.
4. The optical fiber connector of claims 1 or 2, wherein the end connector is one of: LC connector, SC connector, FC connector, ST connector, SMA connector, DMI connector, MU connector, E-2000 connector, D4 connector, Biconic connector, MPO connector and MTRJ connector.
5. The optical fiber connector according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the connectable portion comprises at least one of: a thread, a clip, a recess, and a pin. 5
