Abstract
An optical system for the remote tracking of the position and/or orientation of a pilot's helmet (6) comprising at least three light sources (4, 5) mounted on the pilot's helmet, two position-sensitive detectors (10), each comprising a photosensitive layer (12) arranged to provide output signals dependent on the position of a light spot (I) on the layer, means for imaging the light sources on to the layers, to enable the pilot's helmet to be tracked using the output signals, means (17) for energising the light sources so that the light sources are illuminated simultaneously and the intensity of illumination varies periodically in use at different frequencies for the respective light sources, and means (16) for filtering signals derived from the output signals to detect the periodic variation of illumination, to distinguish between the light on the photosensitive layers from the sources and from background radiation.
