Description
109835/2 A foam hair shampoo preparation Tab Cosmetics Ltd. o-ya >p u»t»ip 3N\? C.92950 This invention provides a novel hair preparation, more particularly a novel hair shampoo preparation.
Conventional retail shampoo is usually based on an anionic (negatively charged) detergent which, in order to clean the hair adequately and leave it in manageable condition, must posses a good water solubility, insensitivity to hard water and a high grease-removal power. Suitable detergents, conventionally and widely used in shampoos are, e.g., sodium lauryl sulfate, triethanolamine lauryl sulfate and the so-called sodium laureth sulfates which are the sodium salts of ethoxylated fatty alcohol sulfates. Most of these detergents are commercially available, as a rule, in the form of highly concentrated aqueous solutions, which have to be diluted in conventional shampoos to a concentration of about 15%, by the addition of water and/or water-miscible organic solvents. Commercial shampoos further contain minor amounts of perfumes, viscosity-control agents (which are essential to make an acceptable product) and, optionally, also further additives to meet special requirements for dry or greasy hair, to reduce dandruff, and the like.
Commercial hair shampoo is generally available either in bottled liquid form or in the form of a jelly or cream, which, according to its firmness, can be packaged in tubes or jars. As stated above, the concentration of the negatively charged detergents, in particular the sodium laureth sulfates, in such commercial shampoo preparations is only about 15% and, consequently, the number of single-rinse doses of shampoo obtainable from a conveniently sized package (in most cases a bottle) is rather limited.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a novel hair shampoo preparation adapted to be dispensed in the novel form of a foam from a pressurized container. It is a further object of the present invention to provide a foamed shampoo dispenser consisting of a pressurized can which, while having a regular convenient size, is capable of containing and dispensing a very considerably higher number of single-rinse doses of hair shampoo.
The first above mentioned object is attained by the present invention which provides a shampoo composition adapted to be dispensed as a foam from a pressurized container and comprising, in percent by weight of the total composition: anionic detergent - about 30 to 60% propylene glycol - about 10 - 30% water - about 10 - 30% propellant gas - about 6 - 15% optionally together with minor amounts of a fragrance and other conventional shampoo additives.
In accordance with another aspect, the invention provides a dispenser adapted to dispense hair shampoo in the form of a foam consisting of a pressurized can containing a hair shampoo composition according to the invention as defined above.
The novel hair shampoo composition according to the invention is prepared by diluting a commercial aqueous solution of an anionic detergent, preferably a sodium laureth sulfate, to the desired concentration by mixing it with propylene glycol and, if desired, water and adding the fragrance and, optionally, other additives. A desired amount of this mixture is introduced into a conventional pressure resistant container which is then charged with the required amount of propellant gas in known manner.
As stated above, suitable anionic detergents include, but are not restricted to, sodium lauryl sulfate, triethanolamine lauryl sulfate and the sodium laureth sulfates.
Suitable propellant gases for use in accordance with the invention are, primarily, the "environment friendly" light hydrocarbons propane, n-butane, isobutane and the like.
The invention is illustrated in detail in the following non-limiting example.
Example.
A liquid mixture was prepared comprising the following ingredients: sodium lauryl ether sulfate - 96.75g (45%)* ("Ungerol LES 3-70" sold by Hunger, Norway) propylene glycol - 48.375g (22.5%)* water - 48.375g (22.5%)* a fragrance - 2.15g (1%)* * percent by weight of the final composition including the propellant gas.
The mixture was introduced into a conventional pressure-resistant can which was then charged in a conventional manner with 19.35g (9%)* of propellant. The total weight of the contents of the can was 215g (100%).
Claims (5)
1. A shampoo composition adapted to be dispensed as a foam from a pressurized container and comprising, in percent by weight of the total composition: anionic detergent - about 30 to 60% propylene glycol - about 10 - 30% water - about 10 - 30% propellant gas - about 6 - 15% optionally together with minor amounts of a fragrance and other conventional shampoo additives.
2. A hair shampoo composition according to claim 1 comprising about 45% by weight of anionic detergent, about 45% by weight of a 1:1 mixture of propylene glycol and water, about 9% by weight of propellant gas and about 1% of a fragrance and other conventional additives.
3. A hair shampoo composition according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the anionic detergent is a sodium laureth sulfate.
4. A hair shampoo composition according to any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein said propellant gas is propane, n-butane or isobutane.
5. A dispenser adapted to dispense hair shampoo in the form of a foam, said dispenser consisting of a pressurized can containing a hair shampoo composition according to any one of claims 1 to 4. For the Applicants, DR. REINHQLD COHN AND PARTNERS By: \ 92950.ndc / mr 29.5.1994
