Abstract
A machine for cutting wedges from a block of material, preferably wood, comprises a reciprocal carriage for slidably transporting successive blocks of material along a predetermined path over a work surface, first and second sets of parallel blades projecting upwardly through the work surface and situated at spaced locations along the predetermined path, the blades in each set being parallel to the direction of movement of the blocks, and means for rotating each block by a small angle relative to the carriage between the first and second sets of blades. <Figure 2>
Description
WOODWORKING MACHINE FOR CUTTING WEDGES
A machine for cutting wedges from a block of material, preferably wood, comprises a reciprocal carriage for slidably transporting successive blocks of material along a predetermined path over a work surface, first and second sets of parallel blades projecting upwardly through the work surface and situated at spaced locations along the predetermined path, the blades in each set being parallel to the direction of movement of the blocks, and means for rotating each block by a small angle relative to the carriage between the first and second sets of blades. .

1. which is now firmly held by the pad and accurately seated in the right angle defined by the two walls 42, 44. At the same time the roller 56 comes off the inclined surface 58 to release the block 20' which moves up to the stop 40 in readiness for the next cycle. As previously stated, for the initial part of the stroke of the carriage 26, Figs. 5 and 6, the full length of the arm 60 abuts and slides along the wall 62 to maintain the pad 38, and hence the block 20, square on to the blades 32, 34. Thus, as the block 20 passes over the first set of blades 32, the latter cut a first set of parallel slots in the block, the first slots being parallel to the opposite sides of the block. As the carriage moves to the position shown in Fig. 7, the free forward end of the arm 60 moves beyond the end of the wall 62 and permits x the pad 38 to rotate through a· small angle relative to the carriage. The particular angle through which the pad rotates is defined by a osoTspc stop means (not shown) on the shaft 36, and is selected such that as the block 20 passes over the second set of blades 34 the latter cut a second set of parallel slots in the block, each second slot extending diagonally between one end of a first slot and the other end of the immediately adjacent first slot, so that the block 20 is divided into a plurality of wedges 70. As stated, the height of the blades 32, 34 above the work surface 28 is slightly less than the height of the blocks. 20, so that the wedges are., joined by a web or........... membrane. This keeps the wedges tidily together yet allows individual wedges to be broken off as desired. -. J After passing over the second set of blades 34 the cut block 20 falls into a further channel 72 where they are conveyed to an output of the machine, such as a packing station. Now the carriage 26 returns to the retracted position of Figs. 3 and 4, and the cycle repeats for the next block.
