Apparatus (1) for forming a cover (2) comprises a main framework (20) within which a sub-framework (25) is slidable on guide rods (68). The sub-framework (25) carries a pair of receiving jigs (26) for receiving a sleeve (8) which is to be seam welded to a base (4) along a weld seam (7) to form the cover (2). A working jig (30) comprising a working framework (31) carries a hot wire electrical resistive element (32) which cooperates with the receiving jig (26) for forming the continuous weld seams (7). A ram (35) moves the working jig (30) between a rest position spaced apart from the receiving jig (26) and a welding position for forming the seam (7). A ram (70) moves the sub-framework (75) for alternately moving the receiving jigs (26) between loading and working positions so that while a sleeve (8) is being welded to a base (4) the sleeve (8) for the next cover can be loaded into the receiving jig (26).
