Abstract
A gas fitting comprising a tubular connection member, one end of which is adapted to engage a first conduit and a second opposite end of which is adapted to engage a second conduit characterised in that the second end and its respective conduit are upon engagement with one another pivotable with respect to one another and are further fastenable to provide a substantially rigid joint.
Description
The present invention relates to a gas fitting.
It is a problem when installing gas supplies, that connections must be made between different types of gas conduit such as plastics hosing or copper pipe. For safety reasons, it is desirable to have as few intermediate connections as possible between respective conduits, while at the same time allowing as much flexibility as possible in making the complete connection.
According to the present invention there is provided a gas fitting comprising a tubular connection member, one end of which is adapted to engage a first conduit and a second opposite end of which is adapted to engage a second conduit characterised in that the second end and its respective conduit are upon engagement with one another pivotable with respect to one another and are further fastenable to provide a substantially rigid joint.

- 2 An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example,, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an exploded perspective view of a gas fitting according to the invention;
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view along a longitudinal plane of the gas fitting of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a gas fitting generally indicated at 10 according to the invention. The gas fitting 10 comprises a tubular connection member 11 having a first end 13 which is adapted to be fixedly fitted into a plastics hosing (not shown) and a second opposite end 12 which is adapted to engage a pipe 14. A mid-portion 30 of the connection member 11 is hexagonal shaped so that the connection member 11 may be engaged by a spanner.
The pipe 14 shown is commonly known as a 'hockey stick', and is provided at it ends 15,16 with similar tubular stop fixtures 17,18 respectively. A shoulder 19 is provided on the internal surface of the stop fixture
17, so that when the pipe 14 is inserted into the stop fixture 17, it abuts against the shoulder 19. When in position the pipe 14 is soldered into the stop fixture 17. The internal diameter of the pipe 14 and the smaller internal diameter of the stop fixture 17 are equal so as to provide a cylindrical conduit of constant internal diameter offering minimum resistance to gas flow.
Before the stop fixture 17 is fitted onto the pipe
14, a nut 21 having an internally threaded portion 23 is located on the pipe 14. The nut 21 has a reduced
IE 930278
- 3 10 diameter opening 22 which forms a shoulder on the internal surface of the nut 21. The nut 21 is placed with the opening 22 first onto the pipe. A flange 20 is formed on the external surface of the stop fixture 17.
The internal diameter of the threaded portion 23 is greater than the external diameter of the flange 20 so that the threaded portion 23 may pass over the flange 20 until the internal shoulder at the opening 22 abuts the flange 20. The diameter of the opening 22 is greater than the external diameter of the stop fixture 17, thus allowing the nut 21 limited pivoting movement around the longitudinal axis of the pipe 14.
The external surface of the second end 12 of the connection member 11 is threaded so that it may engage the nut 21. The circumference of the end 24 of the stop fixture 17 is rounded and engages a correspondingly rounded recessed seating 25 formed around the mouth of the connection member 11. Thus, when the nut 21 is being tightened onto the end 12 of the connection member 11 and the stop fixture 17 rests in the seating 25, the pipe 14 is able to pivot to a limited extent around the longitudinal axis of the connection member 10. When the nut 21 is fully tightened onto the second end 12, the shoulder at the opening 22 positively engages the flange 20 to ensure a rigid and straight connection is made.
In use the first end 13 of the connection member 11 is push fitted into a plastics hosing (not shown). The external surface of the first end 13 is provided with annular ribs 28,29 to ensure positive engagement with the internal surface of the plastics hosing. A plastics annular ring 27 is pushed over the succession of annular ribs 28,29 to lie in a recessed
IE 930278
- 4 section 31 between the mid-portion 30 of the connection member 11 and the raised rib.28. In the case of when the plastics hosing is enclosed in a housing (not shown), the connection member 11 is pushed through an aperture in the housing so that an annular face of the ring 27 engages the internal periphery of the aperture. A horseshoe clip 26 is then pushed over the connection member 11 on the other side of the aperture so that the connection member 11 is held in a stable position relative to the housing.
Thus, when a housing is in an enclosed space and the end 16 of the pipe 14 has to be connected to a further conduit (not shown), the gas fitting 10 enables the pipe
14 to pivot into place before it is finally fixed into position on the second end 12 of the connection member
11.
Claims (5)
1. A gas fitting comprising a tubular connection member, one end of which is adapted to engage a first 5 conduit and a second opposite end of which is adapted to engage a second conduit characterised in that the second end and its respective conduit are upon engagement with one another pivotable with respect to one another and are further fastenable to provide a substantially rigid 10 joint.
2. A gas fitting as claimed in claim 1 wherein the circumference of the second end and the circumference of the end of the second conduit are shaped so that when in 15 contact with one another the connection member and the second conduit are pivotable with respect with one another.
3. A gas fitting as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 20 wherein the second end is externally threaded and a nut is loosely located over the second conduit such that when the nut fully tightened onto the threaded end of the connection member the second conduit is rigidly fastened thereto.
4. A gas fitting as claimed in claims 1,2 or 3 wherein a mid-portion of the connection member is hexagonal shaped. 30
