Description
A structural element
This invention relates to structural elements and in particular to purlins, beams, rails and the like for mounting cladding on a support frame.
According to the invention there is provided a structural element comprising an elongate web extending between an associated pair of spaced-apart substantially parallel elongate flanges, the flanges being mounted at opposite ends of the web, each flange extending laterally outwardly from the web along an outer end of the web, the flanges extending outwardly on opposite sides of the web, the web comprising a central web portion and a pair of outer web portions each of which is connected to the central web portion by a trough, an outer web portion extending between each end of the central web portion and a flange, an outer end of each outer web portion being connected to the flange and an inner end of the outer web portion being connected to the centre web portion by a trough.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the central web portion and the outer web portions are substantially coplanar.
In another embodiment each trough has an inner wall and an outer wall, the inner wall being connected to the central web portion and the outer wall being connected to the outer web portion and the included angle between the inner wall and the outer wall is between 74° and 80°.
In a particularly preferred embodiment the included angle between the inner wall and the outer wall is 77°.
In a further embodiment the ratio of the depth of the inner wall and the depth of the outer wall lies in the §73197 ;
range 1:4 to 1:6.
In another embodiment the ratio of the depth of the trough and the thickness of the material of which the structural element is made lies in the range 2:1 to 7:1.
In a preferred embodiment the depth of the trough is 8 mm.
Each of the outer web portions may be of different length. However, it is preferred that the outer web portions are the same length. Preferably the length of each outer web portion is in the size range 20 - 40mm. Ideally, the length of each outer web portion is 25 mm.
In another embodiment the included angle between the outer wall of the trough and the outer web portion is in the range 145°-155°. Preferably, the included angle between the outer wall of the trough and the outer web portion is 150°.
In a further embodiment the included angle between the inner wall of the trough and the central web portion is in the range 102°-112°. Preferably, the included angle between the inner wall of the trough and the central web portion is 107°.
In another embodiment the ratio of the distance between the flanges and the thickness of the material of which the structural element is made lies in the range 75:1 and 175:1.
Conveniently, a lip is provided at an outer end of each flange, the lip being turned inwardly towards the web. Preferably, the included angle between the lip and the flange is 120°.
In a preferred embodiment each trough projects outwardly of the web on the same side of the web as the flange nearest the trough.
Ideally each flange is substantially perpendicular to the central web portion.
In another embodiment, the flanges are of different widths. Conveniently, this facilitates overlapping the structural elements in situ. Typically, the difference in the widths of the flanges is in the order of 5mm-9mm, most preferably about 7mm.
The invention will be more clearly understood by the following description of some embodiments thereof, given by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:Fig. 1 is a detail perspective view showing an end portion of a purlin according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is an end elevational view of the purlin; and
Figs. 3-6 are end elevational views similar to Fig. 2 of various purlins according to the invention.
Referring to the drawings, and initially to Figs. 1 and 2 thereof, there is illustrated a structural element according to the invention which in this case is a purlin indicated generally by the reference numeral 1. The purlin 1 has a web indicated generally by the reference numeral 2 with flanges 3 extending substantially perpendicularly outwardly at each end of the web 2. A lip 4 is provided at an outer end of each flange 3 turned inwardly towards the web 2. The included angle between the lip 4 and flange 3 is 120°.
The web 2 has a central web portion 6 and a pair of outer web portions 7 connected to each end of the central web portion 6 by troughs 8. An outer web portion 7 extends between each end of the central web portion 6 and a flange
3. An outer end of each outer web portion 7 is connected to the flange 3 and an inner end of the outer web portion 7 is connected to the central web portion 6 by a trough 8.
Each trough 8 is of generally L-section having a long outer wall 9 and a short inner wall 10. The outer wall 9 is connected to an outer web portion 7 and the inner wall 10 is connected to the central web portion 6. It will be noted that the troughs 8 project outwardly on opposite sides of the web 2. Each trough 8 projects outwardly on the same side as the nearest flange 3.
Each outer wall 9 is inclined relative to its associated outer web portion 7. The included angle a between the outer wall 9 and the outer web portion 7 is preferably 150°. The included angle β between the inner wall 10 and the central web portion 6 is preferably 107°.
Preferably, the included angle between the outer wall 9 and inner wall 10 is 77°.
It will be noted that the central web portion 6 and the outer web portions 7 are substantially co-planar. Preferably, the length x of each outer web portion 7 is about 25mm.
Typically the structural element 1 will be manufactured from sheet material of thickness 1.5mm - 3.25mm. Also, the distance between the flanges 3 will typically vary in the range 150mm - 260mm.
Figs 3 to 6 show various other configurations of purlin in which the length of the central web portion 6 is adjusted to vary the distance between the flanges 3 giving purlins of different depth. Fig 3 shows a purlin of depth of 170mm. In the embodiment of Figs 2 and 3 the flanges 3 are 63mm wide. Figs 4, 5 and 6 show purlins of depth 200mm, 230mm and 260mm respectively. In each of these cases the flanges 3 are 75mm wide.
To facilitate overlapping of purlins in situ conveniently the top flange and the bottom flange can be made unequal in width. For the purlins shown in Figs. 2 and 3, which are of 150mm and 170mm depth respectively, the width of the top flange is 67mm and the width of the bottom flange is 60mm. In the case of the purlins shown in Figs. 4 to 6, which are of depth 200mm, 230mm and 260mm, the width of the top flange is 79mm and the width of the bottom flange is 72mm.
The structural element is preferably manufactured from steel, however, any other suitable materials may be used if desired.
The invention is not limited to the embodiments hereinbefore described which may be varied in both construction and detail.
