Abstract

A cage (10) for storing rolls of material comprises a frame (15) having a plurality of horizontal beams (13, 14, 27, 28) fixed together. A plurality of upright beams (11, 12) are located at the intersection of the horizontal beams. Retaining means (23) are connected between two upright beams disposed at opposite ends of a horizontal beam. The retaining means are openable to allow said roll to be loaded into said cage and are securable to hold said roll ins aid cage.

Description

A Cage The present invention relates to a cage. In particular, , the invention relates to a cage for storing rolls of material. < According to the present invention there is provided a cage for storing rolls of material comprising a frame having a plurality of horizontal beams fixed together, a plurality of upright beams located at the intersection of said horizontal beams and retaining means connected between two upright beams disposed at opposite ends of a horizontal beam, said retaining means being openable to allow said roll to be loaded into said cage and securable to hold said roll in said cage.

Preferably, said means comprises a strap including a first part fixed to a first one of said upright beam and a second part fixed to a second one of said upright beams, said first and second parts being secured to one another with a fastening means.

An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cage according to the invention; Figure 2 is a detailed view of a bottom corner of the cage of Figure 1 of the drawings; and * t Figure 3 is a detailed view of a top corner of the cage of Figure 1 of the drawings. * Referring now to the drawings wherein similar numerals have been used to indicate like parts, there is shown a cage generally indicated at 10 according to the invention. The cage 10 includes left and right front upright beams 11 and left and right rear upright beams 12, fixed at their lower ends to the corners between front and rear horizontal beams 13, 27 and left and right side horizontal beams 14, 28 to define a frame 15.

The left front and rear upright beams 11 and 12 and the right front and rear upright beams 11 and 12 are braced by a plurality of evenly spaced, parallel, horizontal beams 16 and 17 respectively. The left and right rear upright beams 12 are braced by a plurality of evenly spaced, parallel, horizontal rear beams 18.

The horizontal beams 16 are joined by a beam 19 which extends from the uppermost horizontal beam 16 to the left side horizontal beam 14 and is substantially parallel to the upright beams 11 and 12.

The horizontal beams 17 are joined by a beam 20 which extends from the uppermost horizontal beam 17 to the right side horizontal beam 28 and is substantially parallel to the upright beams 11 and 12.

The horizontal rear beams 18 are joined by a beam 25 which extends from the uppermost horizontal beam 18 to the rear horizontal beam 27 and is substantially ' parallel to the upright beams 12.

The left and right side horizontal beams 14, 28 are braced by a plurality of evenly spaced, parallel, horizontal beams 21 and the front and rear horizontal beams 13, 27 are braced by a plurality of evenly spaced, parallel, horizontal beams 22.

A webbing strap 23 is attached between the midpoints of the front upright beams 11. A fastener 24 is provided at approximately the midpoint of the strap 23 so that the strap may be unfastened to form two separate parts. The strap 23 is capable of retaining an object within the cage, for example a roll of fabric (not shown), of up to 5001bs in weight.

Containers 10 may be stacked on top of one another by locating a first container 10 raised, for example, on a forklift truck (not shown) over a second container 10 resting on the floor. Figure 2 shows a male locating member 29 projecting downwardly from the lower end of the right front upright beam 11. Figure 3 shows a female locating member 30, comprising a flared opening projecting from the top of the right front upright beam 11. Similar male and female locating members 29, 30 are provided on each upright beam 11, 12 so that when the first container 10 is lowered onto the second container 10 the respective male and female members 29, 30 engage to secure the first and second containers together, A support bar 26 is provided towards each end of the cage 10. One end of each support bar 26 is attached to the front horizontal beam 13 and the other end is attached to the rear horizontal beam 27. The support bars 26 are located between and are substantially parallel to the left side horizontal beam 14 and the horizontal beam 22, and the right side horizontal beam 28 and the horizontal beam 22 respectively.

The support bars 26 are provided such that when a cage 10 is in use, and is resting on the ground (not shown), only the support bars 26 will be in contact with the ground.

Claims (3)

1. A cage for storing rolls of material comprising a frame having a plurality of horizontal beams fixed 5 together, a plurality of upright beams located at the intersection of said horizontal beams and retaining means connected between two upright beams disposed at opposite ends of a horizontal beam, said retaining means being openable to allow said roll to be loaded into said 10 cage and securable to hold said roll in said cage.

2. A cage as claimed in Claim 1 wherein said retaining means comprises a strap including a first part fixed to a first one of said upright beams and a second part 15 fixed to a second one of said upright beams, said first and second parts being secured to one another with a fastening means.
