Abstract

A perpetual calendar (1) is formed by a flat blank (2) having a front calendar face (5). Segments (8) bearing monthly indicia and segments (9) with date indicia are provided on the front calendar face (5). A flat disc (12) is rotatably mounted behind the blank (2). The disc (12) has outer segments (16) with yearly indicia and inner segments (24) with week day indicia. The disc (12) passes through an associated slot (20) in the blank (2) for alignment of the yearly indicia in segments (16) with the monthly indicia in segments (8). A flap on the blank (2) resiliently engages a rear of the disc (12) as it passes through the slot (20) to retain the selected segments (8, 16) in alignment. A cut-out slot (26) in the blank exposes the week day indicia of segments (24) which is aligned with the date indicia of segments (9).

Description

This invention relates to a perpetual calendar.
According to the invention there is provided a perpetual calendar comprising a flat blank having a front calendar face, the front calendar face bearing monthly indicia relating to months of the year and date indicia relating to days of the month, a flat disc rotatably mounted behind the blank, the flat disc bearing yearly indicia relating to a number of successive years and week day indicia relating to days of the week, the yearly indicia aligning through a first slot in the blank with the monthly indicia on the blank and the week day indicia on the disc aligning through a second slot in the blank with the date indicia on the blank. Advantageously, as the blank and disc are flat, the calendar can be easily delivered through the post.
In one embodiment of the invention the slots in the blank are spaced-apart about an open central portion on the calendar face of the blank. Thus advantageously advertising indicia may be applied to the central portion.
In a particularly preferred embodiment holding means is provided for the disc. This holding means advantageously holds the disc in a desired alignment with the blank for register of associated indicia.
In a preferred embodiment the disc holding means comprises a flap on the blank resiliently engagable with the disc. The flap preferably engages a rear of the disc. Ideally the flap is integrally formed with the blank. β 3 (5 3 4 - 2 In a further embodiment support means is provided for supporting the calendar face of the blank in a standing position.
Preferably the support means comprises one or more support flaps on the blank foldable between a flat stored position and a folded support position.
Conveniently a disc engaging slot is provided at a fold line on the blank such that when the blank is in the folded position the slot engages a rim of the disc to retain the disc against a back face of the blank.
Conveniently free ends of the blank may be interengagable when the blank is in the folded position.
The invention will be more clearly understood by the following description of an embodiment thereof, given by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which : Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a perpetual calendar according to the invention; Fig. 2 is an end view of the perpetual calendar; Fig. 3 is a plan view of a front of the calendar shown in a flat unfolded position; and Fig. 4 is a plan view of a rear of the calendar in the flat position.
Referring to the drawings there is illustrated a perpetual calendar according to the invention indicated generally by the reference numeral 1. The calendar 1 comprises a blank 2, typically of plastics or cardboard material. A number of spaced-apart fold lines 3 are provided in the blank 2 for folding the blank 2 between an open flat position as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 and a folded support position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The blank 1 has a front calendar face 5 which is supported in an inclined standing position when the blank 2 is folded as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Indicia is provided on the front calendar face 5. This indicia comprises a number of segments 8 each bearing monthly indicia relating to one or more months of the year (see Fig. 3). The indicia also includes a number of segments 3, each segment 9 bearing indicia relating to a number of days of the month arranged in tabular form.
A flat disc 12 is rotatably mounted behind the blank 2 by means of a pivot pin 14. This disc 12 has a number of outer segments 16 each bearing yearly indicia relating to calendar years. It will be noted that an upper portion of the disc 12 passes through an associated slot 20 in the blank 2 for alignment of the yearly indicia in segments 16 with the monthly indicia in segments 8. A support flap 21 is formed by portion of the blank 2 which resiliently engages a rear of the disc 12 to hold the disc 12 in any desired set position relative to the blank 2 for register of associated indicia on the blank 2 and disc 12.
The disc 12 also has inner segments 24 bearing week day indicia. A cut-out slot 26 in the blank 2 exposes the week day indicia of segments 24 which is aligned with the date indicia of segments 9 upon rotation of the disc 12.
It will be noted that a lower end 27 of the disc 12 engages within an associated retaining slot 28 in the blank 2 when the blank 2 is in the folded position to securely retain the disc 12 against the calendar face 5.
A locking flap 30 at one end of the blank 2 is releasably engagable with an associated catch slot 31 at the opposite end of the blank 2 for retaining the blank 2 in the folded position.
It will be noted that the front calendar face 5 has an open central portion 35 where conveniently indicia such as advertising indicia may be readily easily applied.
In use, the blank 2 is folded and the locking flap 30 engaged with the catch slot 31 to support the blank 2 in the folded in-use position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. To set the calendar the disc 12 is rotated to align yearly indicia of segments 16 with a desired monthly indicia of segments 8. In such position the weekday indicia of segments 24 is automatically aligned correctly with the daily indicia of segments 9. Thus the calendar is set for a particular month of the year. It can be reset at the beginning of each month and year.
It will be appreciated that instead of the free standing calendar as described above with a foldable blank the calendar may be provided with a stiff flat blank having means for mounting the calendar on a wall or the like, for example.
Advantageously as the calendar when unfolded is a flat blank, it can be readily easily delivered through the post.
The invention is not limited to the embodiment hereinbefore described which may be varied in both construction and detail.
