Abstract

The manufacturing method includes leading a foil web (10) from a foil supply reel (11) and leading an associated rectangular card blank (12) from a card supply magazine (14). The foil web (10) and card blank (12) are overlapped and delivered to a stamping station (15). At the stamping station (15) a die stamp (16) embosses a desired design of foil from the foil web (10) onto the card blank (12). Downstream of the stamping statin (15) the waste foil web (18) is wound up on a collecting reel (20). As the waste foil web (18) ois lifted away from the card (12), a number of air jets (22) blow a pressurised air stream (23) or air streams between the foil wev (18) and the card (12) at each embossed portion to aid in the separation of the waste foil wev (18) from the card blank (12). <Figure 3>

Description

This invention relates to the stamping of foil decorations on a card substrate.
The invention is particularly concerned with the manufacture of photographic mounts of card materia! with a foil decoration. Such a photographic mount is shown in Fig.’s 1 and 2 attached and is indicated generally by the reference numeral 1.
The mount 1 comprises a card blank 2 which is generally L-shaped having a front panel 3, a rear panel 4 and an intermediate panel 5 connected to the rear panel 4 by a fold line 6. A central cut-out portion of rear panel 5 forms a window 7. A decorative foil endless border 8 surrounds the window 7. Additional decorative foil designs may be provided on an exterior of the front panel 3. In use, a picture 10 is mounted in front of the rear panel 4 and the intermediate panel is then folded down about the fold line 6 and bonded to the rear panel 4 capturing the picture 10 behind the window 7 as shown in Fig.2. A simpler, cheaper mount without the front panel 3 can also be provided. In manufacturing the foil embossed blank 2 a foil web is overlaid with the blank 2 and a die stamps the designs required from the foil web onto the blank 2. The foil web is then peeled away leaving the embossed designs on the blank 2. However, particularly with enclosed designs - such as the endless border 8 of the mount 1 the waste foil has a tendency to stick and not part cleanly away from the embossed foil design. This limits the speed of the manufacturing process.
The present invention is directed towards overcoming this problem.
Statements of Invention According to the invention there is provided a method for manufacturing a photographic mount of card material with an embossed foil decoration thereon, including: leading a card blank from a card magazine; -2IE ο 9 Ο 9 1 8 leading a foil web from a foil supply reel; overlapping the foil web with the card blank and delivering the overlapped foil and blank to a stamping station; stamping a preselected foil design from the foil web onto the card blank; downstream of the stamping station separating the web of waste foil material away from the card blank by blowing a pressurised air stream from a number of pressurised air jets mounted spaced-apart across a feed path along which the card blank is delivered in a controlled manner between the waste foil web and the card blank in the region of the or each embossed portion for parting away the waste foil web from the card blank.
In another embodiment each air jet has a pressurised air inlet valve and the method includes closing selected valves not directly in the path of the embossed portion or embossed portions of the card blank.
In a further embodiment the method includes the step of delivering pressurised air to an air distribution manifold, said air distribution manifold having a plurality of outlets, valve means at each outlet operable to open or close the outlet, each outlet being connected to at least one air jet, the method including opening selected outlets and closing the remaining outlets for controlling which air jets are open and which air jets are closed prior to delivering the card blank and the foil web to the stamping station. Conveniently each outlet may be connected to a pair of air jets.
Brief Description of the Drawings The invention will be more clearly understood by the following description of some embodiments thereof, given by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawing's, in which: Fig. 1 is an elevational view of a card blank for forming a photographic mount; IE Ο 9 09 18 -3Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a photographic mount formed using the card blank of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a schematic illustration of the method of the invention.
Detailed Description of the Invention Referring to Fig 3, the method includes leading a foil web 10 from a foil supply reel 11 and leading an associated rectangular card blank 12 from a card supply magazine 14. The foil web 10 and card blank 12 are overlapped and delivered to a stamping station 15. At the stamping station 15 a die stamp 16 embosses a desired design of foil from the foil web 10 onto the card blank 12.
Downstream of the stamping station 15 the waste foil web 18 is wound up on a collecting reel 20. It will be noted that as the waste foil web 18 is lifted away from the card 12 a number of air jets 22 blow a pressurised air stream 23 or air streams between the foil web 18 and the card 12 at each embossed portion to aid in the separation of the waste foil web 18 from the card blank 12. Thus a quicker, cleaner separation of the waste foil web is achieved allowing the production speed to be greatly increased.
A number of air jets 22 are provided mounted spaced-apart across a feed path along which the card blank 12 is delivered. Each jet 22 is connected to a pressurised air supply 24. it will be noted that a vaive 26 is provided for each jet 22 so that selected jets 22 can be switched off and on as required. Thus the location of the air stream or air streams across the card blank feed path can be chosen to suit a particular product and any unnecessary jets 22 shut off.
A plurality of air jets 22 are mounted spaced-apart on a support rail. Each air jet 22 is connected to an air distribution manifold having an inlet connected to a pressurised air supply. The manifold has a plurality of outlets connected to the air jets 22. Conveniently, each outlet supplies air to two associated air jets 22. Each outlet can be switched between open and closed positions as required to control air supply to IE 09 09 1 8 -4selected air jets 22.
The embossed card blank is then delivered for further processing, to cut to size and shape, cut out the window 7 and make the fold line 6.
The invention is not limited to the embodiments hereinbefore described which may be varied in both construction and detail with the scope of the appended claims.
