Description
“A stabiliser”
The present invention relates to a stabiliser for stabilising an article for preventing rolling of the article.
Cylindrical and spherical articles when being transported tend to roll around the area in which they are located. For example, when a cylindrical or spherical article is being transported in the boot of a car, unless the article is tied or otherwise secured in the boot, such articles tend to roll around the boot. This is a particular problem when one is transporting a fuel gas cylinder, such as, for example, cylinders which are commonly referred to as gas cylinders which store liquefied petroleum gas for use in domestic cooking and heating. There is no known method for transporting such gas cylinders in the boot of a car which satisfactorily prevents the gas cylinders from rolling in the boot of a car as the car corners, accelerates or brakes.
There is therefore a need for a stabiliser which overcomes this problem.
The present invention is directed towards providing such a stabiliser for preventing an article from rolling.
According to the invention there is provided a stabiliser for preventing an article from rolling, the stabiliser comprising a base, and an attachment means for attaching the stabiliser to the article, the attachment means extending from the base so that when the article is engaged by the attachment means, and the article and the stabiliser is

ΙΕΟ 1 09 17 supported on the base, the article is prevented from rolling.
In one embodiment of the invention the stabiliser is adapted particularly for stabilising a cylindrical or spherical article.
Preferably, the attachment means defines a longitudinally extending main axis, which when in use coincides with an axis about which the article rotates when rolling. Advantageously, the base extends transversely relative to the main axis.
In a further embodiment of the invention the base extends outwardly beyond the attachment means for stabilising the article.
In another embodiment of the invention the attachment means extends upwardly from the base for supporting the article above the base, and preferably, the attachment means comprises a pair of spaced apart article engaging members which together partly embrace the article therebetween.
In one embodiment of the invention each article engaging member is of arcuate shape, and preferably, each article engaging member terminates in a distal end, which preferably is resilient for accommodating engagement of the article between the article engaging members.
In a further embodiment of the invention the article engaging members define a cradle for receiving the article, and preferably, the cradle defines a portion of the outer periphery of the article, and ideally, the article engaging members are joined and extend from each other, and ideally, each article engaging member extends for approximately 120° around the article, thus, preferably, leaving approximately 120° of the article exposed.
In another embodiment of the invention the stabiliser is of plastics material, and preferably, is integrally formed, and may be formed, for example, by injection moulding, or by other suitable plastics forming processes.
In one embodiment of the invention the stabiliser is adapted for preventing a fuel gas cylinder of the type commonly referred to as a gas cylinder from rolling.
The invention will be more clearly understood from the following description of an embodiment thereof, which is given by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of a stabiliser according to the invention,
Fig. 2 is an end elevational view of the stabiliser of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the stabiliser of Fig. 1 in use.
Referring to the drawings, there is illustrated a stabiliser according to the invention indicated generally by the reference numeral 1 for stabilising a cylindrical article, in
IE010917 this embodiment of the invention a fuel gas cylinder of the type which is typically referred to as a gas cylinder 3 for storing liquefied petroleum gas for use in domestic cooking and heating. The stabiliser 1 is particularly suitable for preventing the gas cylinder 3 from rolling around the boot of a car or other such vehicle when the gas cylinder 3 is being transported in the car, particularly during cornering, braking and accelerating of the vehicle. The stabiliser 1 comprises a base 5 on which the stabiliser 1 and the gas cylinder 3 are supported in the boot of a car or elsewhere.
An attachment means in the shape of a cradle is formed by a pair of spaced apart io article engaging members 6 which extend upwardly from the base 5 for partly embracing the gas cylinder 3. The article engaging members 6 are formed by a single arcuate member which extends for approximately 220°, and extends on respective opposite sides of a centre line 7 for approximately 120° on each side to form the article engaging members 6 such that the gas cylinder 3 is embraced between the article engaging members 6. The article engaging members 6 define a centrally extending longitudinal main axis 4 which in use coincides with the central geometrical axis of the gas cylinder 3 when the stabiliser 1 is attached to the gas cylinder 3. Reinforcing struts 8 extend upwardly from the base 5 to engage the article engaging members 6 tangentially for supporting and reinforcing the article engaging members 6.
In this embodiment of the invention the stabiliser 1 is formed as a single integral unit from a single piece of plastics material, and the article engaging members 6 towards their respective distal ends 9 are resilient for facilitating engagement and disengagement of the gas cylinder 3 between the article engaging members 6. One of the article engaging members 6 is illustrated in Fig. 1 in broken lines having been urged outwardly against its inherent resilience for facilitating engagement of the gas cylinder 3 between the arcuate engaging members 6.
In order to stabilise the assembly of the gas cylinder 3 and the stabiliser 1, the base 5 extends transversely relative to the main axis 4 and portions 10 of the base 5 extend outwardly beyond the struts 8 on respective opposite sides of the stabiliser 1.
The stabiliser 1 may be formed by any suitable plastics forming process, for example, injection moulding, extrusion, and if formed by extrusion, an extruded length of material would be cut transversely along the main axis 4 to form a plurality of stabilisers. Alternatively, the stabiliser 1 may be machined from a single piece of plastics material. Needless to say, the stabiliser 1 may be manufactured from other suitable materials.
In use, where it is desired to stabilise a gas cylinder 3 in, for example, the boot of a car, the stabiliser 1 is secured to the gas cylinder 3 by engaging the gas cylinder 3 between the article engaging members 6. The gas cylinder is then oriented with its central longitudinal geometrical axis lying horizontally and placed on the floor of the boot of the car supported on the base 5. Thus, the gas cylinder 3 is stabilised and is prevented from rolling within the boot. While the gas cylinder 3 has been illustrated as being stabilised by a single stabiliser 1, in certain cases, it is envisaged that two stabilisers 1 may be necessary, this may be the case in the event of the stabiliser being used in connection with a relatively long cylindrical article. In which case, a pair of stabilisers 1 would be attached to the cylinder at spaced apart locations axially along the cylinder.
While the stabiliser has been described for stabilising a gas cylinder, it will be appreciated that the stabiliser may be used for stabilising any other type of cylindrical article and indeed, the stabiliser may be used for stabilising an article which has the ability to roil but is not necessarily cylindrical or completely cylindrical. Such articles, for example, may be of oval transverse cross-section, hexagonal, octagonal or any other polygonal cross-section. It is also envisaged that the stabiliser may be used for stabilising a spherical article or a substantially spherical article.
In the drawings, the stabiliser has been illustrated as being of specific dimensions which are given in millimetres. However, it will be appreciated that these dimensions are solely given for the purposes of example and are in no way to be considered restricting the scope of the invention in any way. Needless to say, the stabiliser may be of any other suitable or desired shape.
The invention is not limited to the embodiment hereinbefore described, which may be varied in construction and detail.
