Abstract

A method of manufacturing an optical cable assembly, such as an MT-style optical collector. The connector comprises a housing having an optical fibre passing through the housing and terminating flush with an end face. The housing includes a side recess exposing the fibre, and the recess containing a cured resin fixing the fibre in position in the housing. A ferrule is fixed to the end of the fibre remote from the housing. The method comprises the following steps: (a) fixing a ferrule to one end of the fibre, (b) placing a quantity of uncured resin in the side recess, (c) feeding the other end of the fibre through the housing to emerge from the said external face, (d) placing the housing in a first locating means in a jig, (e) placing the ferrule in a second locating means in the jig, the second locating means being at a predetermined distance from the first locating means, the fibre being free to slide in the housing during such placement, (f) allowing the resin to cure at ambient temperature while the connector remains in the jig, and (g) polishing the said external face of the housing to remove the portion of the fibre extending beyond the said external face.

Description

A METHOD OF MANUFACTURING OPTICAL CABLE ASSEMBLIES A method of manufacturing an optical cable assembly, such as an MT-style optical collector.

Claims (5)

1. A method of manufacturing an optical cable assembly of the kind comprising a housing, at least one optical fibre passing through the housing and terminating flush with an external face thereof, and a ferrule fixed to the end of the fibre remote from the housing, the housing including a side recess exposing the fibre therein such recess containing a cured resin fixing the fibre in position in the housing, wherein the method comprises, not necessarily in the order stated: (a) fixing a ferrule to one end of the fibre, (b) placing a quantity of uncured resin in the side recess, (c) feeding the other end of the fibre through the housing to emerge from the said external face, (d) placing the housing in a first locating means in a jig, (e) placing the ferrule in a second locating means in the jig, the second locating means being at a predetermined distance from the first locating means, the fibre being free to slide in the housing during such placement, (f) allowing the resin to cure at ambient temperature while the connector remains in the jig, and Fibrel.doc IE000272 (g) polishing the said external face of the housing to remove the portion of the fibre extending beyond the said external face.
2. A method of manufacturing an optical cable assembly according to Claim 1, wherein the assembly has a plurality of optical fibres entering one end of the housing and terminating flush with a common external face at the other end of the housing, each fibre having a respective ferrule fixed thereto at its end remote from the housing, wherein step (e) comprises placing each ferrule in a respective second locating means in the jig, each second locating means being at a different predetermined distance from the first locating means, each fibre being free to slide in the housing during such placement.
3. A jig for use in a method according to Claim 1 or 2, said jig having first and second locating means, as defined in Claim 1 or 2.
4. A method of manufacturing an optical cable assembly, substantially as described herein with reference to Figs. 1-4 of the accompanying drawings.
5. A jig, substanially as described herein, with reference to Figs. 1-4 of the accompanying drawings. Fibrel.doc
